The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bartho Okolo Presents 18 units of Microscopes and 3 units of PH Meters to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.  [size=14pt]I was searching for a piece of information about the University of Nigeria and I stumbled on this piece of news item both on UNN's website (http://unn.edu.ng/news/vice-chancellor-professor-bartho-okolo-presents-18-units-microscopes-and-3-units-ph-meters-facu) and its Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/universityofnigeria) and was left absolutely shocked. UNN bought 18 units of Microscopes and 3 units of PH Meters and that called for the VC, followed by camera crew, to go and formally present these items to the academic unit of the university that needs them? Is the VC so jobless and senseless as to condescend so low? What is worth celebrating in buying 18 units of Microscopes and 3 units of PH Meters, presenting them and making a BIG FUSS about it? Universities in the developed world (Europe and North America) routinely buy items of laboratory equipment worth millions of pounds and dollars. These would normally be delivered by van/truck drivers to the relevant laboratories only for lab technicians and/managers to acknowledge their receipt and properly document them in the relevant inventories. I had to Google the VC's name and was shocked to realise he holds a PhD from Strathclyde University, Glasgow, UK. With such an exposure, this man must be taking people for a ride or considering them as fools. Considering remarks on UNN's Facebook, the people are apparently fooled. Primary and Secondary schools here in the UK would not celebrate the purchase of 18 units of Microscopes and 3 units of PH Meters. Yet that calls for celebration in UNN with the VC presenting the items at a ceremony with paparazzis in attendance. Isn't this symptomatic of what has become of the Nigerian educational system which some continue to brag about on NL, blindly comparing it with education in the developed world? We can better appreciate how not to 'politicize education' if you can reduce your fonts and not posting education related topics in politics section |
