Whar a hail you mean? When Imo state was created in 1976, there was basically little or no difference in urbanization levels between Owerri, Orlu and Okigwe.

The Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA)
has commenced the resurfacing and patching of
some inter-state roads that need urgent attention
in Imo State.
This is coming after the lamentation of road users,
residents and the state government on the bad
condition of the roads.
One of these roads is the Owerri-Onitsha Road
which is an inter-state road that begins from the
control junction of Owerri Municipal and ends in
Onitsha, Anambra State’s commercial capital.
The Chief of Staff to the Imo State government,
Uche Nwosu, disclosed that the state government
had at a point, embarked on a short term remedy of
a major failed portion of Owerri-Onitsha Road
which was over 60km, to alleviate the sufferings of
road users when the federal government was not
forthcoming.
The South-East Zonal Coordinator of FERMA, Rufus
Onimisi, who was represented by the agency’s
engineer in Imo State, Chukwuemeka Maduagwu,
said that the agency was committed to ensuring
that all failed federal roads in the south-east
receive maximum attention, especially since the
rains were over.
Mr Maduagwu implored residents and road users to
desist from dumping refuse on drainage channels
pointing out that it was the major cause of most of
the failed sections of the roads.
He added that FERMA has begun the process of
cleaning up the drainage and ensuring that there
is free flow of traffic especially on the Owerri-
Onitsha road during the yuletide.
The FERMA official also said that arrangements
were in place to intervene at the very critically
failed location around KM 0+200 area of the
Owerri-Port Harcourt road to ease vehicular
movement.
Roads users and some residents of Owerri
commended the federal government for the new
development as it would go a long way to reduce
the traffic congestion experienced on the roads.
They expressed hope that the government, through
FERMA and the Ministry of Works would extend the
gesture to other failed federal roads across the
south-east region to give it a total face-lift before
the rains start in 2016.

Converge For 34th FEPSGA Games
in Owerri


The 34th edition of the
Federation of Public Service Games (FEPSGA)
begins Friday in Owerri with a Pre-Games Seminar,
the President of FEPSGA, Dahiru Hassan, said on
Thursday.
Hassan confessed that annual competition which
will hold over 15 days would have more than 10,000
athletes and officials participating.


“The city of Owerri is going to be more alive over
the next 15 days as over 10,000 athletes and
officials from federal and state ministries,
departments and agencies converge for the 34th
FEPSGA Games.
“The sports fiesta will commence with the pre-
Games seminar, which will hold at the Top Rate
Luxury Hotel, to herald the 15-day programme,’’ he
said.


The FEPSGA president said the games would be
formally declared open by the Imo State Executive
Governor, Rochas Okorocha, during the week.
“He (Okorocha) has assured us, the organisers, that
he must be personally present at the official opening
ceremony being the first South-East State Governor
to host the Games since its inception 34 years
ago,’’ he said.


Hassan promised that FEPSGA was ready to
organise an exciting Games, having received the
full financial backing of the Imo State Government.
“We are in Owerri and we have seen the dividends
of democracy as facilitated by the administration of
Rochas Okorocha.


“The Governor has equally shown it to FEPSGA by
giving the Federation all necessary support. So, our
Games will be exciting,” he said.
The FEPSGA president said athletes at the Games
would compete in 14 scoring events, with defending
champions Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps
(NSCDC) aiming to maintain status quo.
NSCDC had won the Games’ last edition held in
Akure, Ondo State last year.


Meanwhile, pre-Games activities have since
heightened ahead on Saturday’s events.
The Games’ current best-kitted agency, National
Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) who usually won
its first gold medal through the march-past event,
have promised to do so again this year.


The Games’ organisers, in order to create more
awareness within the Owerri city for the Games,
have planned a road show for Saturday to re-
awaken residents’ interest.
“This is in order to drum up more support for the
Games from the residents. In addition, we want to
commend the sports writers in Imo State for their
concern by giving the Games good publicity and
coverage.


“We promise as the organisers that we will stage a
hitch-free Games as every necessary thing has
been put in place by the Local Organising
Committee (LOC),’’ the Games’ Media Consultant,
Udochukwu Emmanuel, assured.

One thing I hope Rochas or subsequent Imo governors should do is to line Owerri roads with trees. With the Lagos vibe that Owerri exudes, we need some sorta protection from the surging sun.

We also need to expand Owerri beyond its limits. Let thebnew Owerri extend to areas such as Obosimma in Ohaji and places like Ogbako. Owerri definitely has prospects. We just need to think bigger.

As I was coming back I took some photos ongoing work at nekede old road @abagworo pls if u are close to this governor pls tell him that owerri is too dirty he should employ enough people that would be cleaning up the state because the state is so dirty, Governor Rochas needs to learn from the previous government about cleanliness so Imo can be very neat and he should provide enough truck that would be carry the dirty quickly both in the capital and in rural parts of the state Imo needs to be clean and green

In four years, tens of thousands of people are being killed softly as the breathe dust along the old Orlu-Owerri Road in Orlu. The road and some others like it in Orlu were excavated for construction but have remained dust in the last four years. No body could have imagined that a governor could have the heart to kill its people softly like this. What happens to the lungs of those living near the road?

In the chase of self-sufficiency and prosperity and the development of our race, the unity of igbos in the different parts of the country must not be taken with child’s play. This is not a bedroom talk and we will not wash it down the drain. The population of igbos around the world can be estimated as 40million or more. These people around the world do not have a common voice and they’re seen as people who are sedentary in nature. This is a bad one for us. The igbos cannot sit down and stay alone. We achieve more by coming together and do things. It is rather a foolish idea that an igbo man believes if he hustle’s on his own, he will succeed. Yes, he will succeed but his success can only be marginal because when he get to a certain height, he will need more people to push his great wall for him. We were not born to live like scattered humans, we need coordination in our lives. We need to be coordinated in every decision we make. The next decision that this country will take will affect our lives, our future and businesses. We should be one when these things happen. The only thing that can make us develop as one is if we break the artificial boundary created in this country. Immediately a state is created, an anambra man feels that he is not the same as the imo man. That is the height of stupidity! Did Eri create anything called Imo or anambra? Why the senseless disunity. Igbos will be comparing the development between enugu and Aba, some will go as far as insulting the other people’s land. This should stop. We are not here for child’s play, we are here for nation building. We should build the igbo nation. An anambra man is not different from an asaba man neither does an abia man different from either the obigbos and the ikwerres. We should stop the intra-ethnic group segregation and disunity. That picture of IMSUTH, Orlu by the American shows how low and bad things are in IMSUTH: the now rough and dirty signboard and fence were the ones built when OBJ commissioned IMSUTH in 2007. So what other evidence is needed to show the decadence in the hospital?
