You're so on point, its soooo easy to pass the 3 exams that make you an OCP nowadays that you'll find people who can't create a simple loopback adapter on windows claiming they're Oracle professionals angry angry angry and you expect organisations to place their balls in the hands of these novices?

There are oracle jobs in Nigeria but sadly lost to expatriates (Indians) and man-know-man backroom employments.
u are right, but how many Nigerian ICT professionals have been given the chance to prove what they can do?

YOU CAN GO ON TO (NIIT) OR (APTECH) TO THOSE SKULS RE MORE PRACTICAL

i doubt it! i have taught in one of those schools mentioned (would not mention name to save their face) with a lab of no working computers, when there we had to bring up just 6computers, forget NIIT/APTECH for practical, practical is practice u do for urself, get jobs, do some for free, do some for change, the challenges u meet are real life and u get to practice that way.

Many Nigerian ICT professionals cram dumps and pass certifications. I have interviewed many Oracle certified ICT professionals. When I give them a real-world practical problem on production environment to solve, they flop. I ask them, how did you get this certification? They make up excuses. They studied materials and passed it.

The truth is: Technology is advancing in Nigeria. No more rooms shabby certifications. Companies really want your expertise and not paying you for certifications.

Bams95: Please people,
what hope do oracle DBAs have in getting jobs in Nigeria?
Is there any prospect in being an oracle DBA?
Are companies in Nigeria really using Oracle at the moment?
and what hope for the inexperienced oracle professionals in Nigeria, because it seems the
very few jobs that are available are for oracle DBAs with years of experience.

please i need your contributions.
I am an I.T Professional for many years in Nigeria and I can tell authoritatively that Oracle DBA track is a very lucrative and exciting career path.
Oracle DBAs are amongst the best paid I.T professionals in this country.
But in every field of endeavour one chooses, one needs to be passionate and very good at it.
The generally mistake people make in choose an I.T track to specialise in is that one start looking for a profitable one.
That is a mistake. When deciding what to do, consider the following.

Are you passionate about it ?Because it is passion and interest that puts one apart from their peers.
Can you cope with the long gruelling hours it takes to do the work?
What are the things/Skills I need to do acquire to be the best at this.

Don't worry about money .Once you are good, money will come.
I hope that helps.

Trust me. I.T is a practical job .Nobody is going to pay you to sit down and do nothing.

I appreciate your contribution. i went for training,i studied hard to know more about what i was taught,i did the exams.so its not abt the certification.moreover, its posible for anybody to sit for ocp exam but its not possible for anybody to have OCP certificate without going through an Oracle approved training center.I did my training at an Oracle approved training center in Lagos here.so its not about dumps or certificates, its about what i have passion for.

Bams95: thanks for ur reply.am in Nigeria, infact in Lagos.its not only the fact that i have OCP CERTIFICATE,i can use the oracle database effectively.i can use the various tools such as PL/SQL,SQL,RMAN.I can do various database administration tasks.but the problem is its just difficult to get an Oracle job.i would love to work as an oracle person but most companies prefer to employ people that have worked in an oracle environment before.I am even ready to work FREE(without salary) just to get the experience.

why make this claim. Many companies use oracle, all banks in Nigeria uses oracle as their database platform. @ Poster there is hope for you. As a matter of fact you can get a job as quick as possible. Just submit your C.Vs to Banks, Oil Companies and I.T firms. I will suggest I.T firms where you can get the necessary experience you need.

Re: Any Hope For Oracle Professionals In Nigeria? by charlsecy4(m): 6:38pm On Sep 27, 2012
ekt_bear: I am a bit surprised that MSSQL seems to be more relevant than Oracle in Nigeria. The opposite is true in most other places, no? Oracle is the top dog in most markets.

In Nigeria, most things work the other way round. For examples, in more advanced countries, Insurance Companies normally own Banks, but in Nigeria, however, most Insurance Companies are Subsidiaries of Banks.

If you steal in billions of Naira, you will be set free, but if you steal in hundreds or thousands, you will land in jail.

I second that. Oracle OCP is one of the most lucrative certification not only in Nigeria but worldwide. I was surprised that someone is asking 'Any Hope For Oracle Professionals In Nigeria?' I was even more surprised reading most of the responses on page 1. Just typical of a lot of Nigerians having an opinion on something they know nothing about.

I started out as an Oracle DBA before moving on to other fields. I have a lot of friends who also started as DBA and many are still DBAs, some working in Nigeria and many working overseas on the basis of being OCP. As an example, one of those working in Nigeria as a DBA earns over 1.5M naira a month.

I didn't start out in training school but in a bank junior dba role and pursued certification later. Most of my friends pursued certification then start out in training schools which are good networking ground for landing better jobs - lots of the students are already DBAs and give you info when there is a new role going. A lot of the jobs are not advertised but you always hear about new roles from your network if you're already working as a DBA. So like AJ said, start at a training school and let your students know you're open to new opportunities. If you're really good, you should get a good one! I personally do not know anyone who was OCP who didnt eventually do very well.

I am an Oracle DBA majored in database security and audit. Yes you can get a job at least I did and a host of others. I work in a bank and I can tell you dat all banks in Nigeria use oracle as their back-end DB. I've been a dba for like 6 years now. I will share my experience with you. When I finished my training I started up as a lecturer where I hapened to have inspired one of my students who went and told his boss at the bank where he worked dat I could be very useful in their dept as they had a big challenge auditing d banks Oracle db. I was just called for a chat and they were impressed. The rest is history. Wish you good luck

As a beginner u have to first brush up ur skills(u'll need it for the interview). Start by being a resouce person (ie lecturer). Dat will definitly get u noticed if ur good. I lectured for 2yrs.

I am an Oracle Applications DBA which is a combination of an Oracle DBA and an Administrator of Oracle e-business suite of applications and I must say that it has been a very rewarding profession. I must confess that I did not know much about it when did my first Oracle certification (Internet Application development) in 2002. Back then, I was always interested in Programming and therefore, opted for the Oracle Application development option. This sparked my interest in Programming with Java and c++. I got my first big break as a student when One of the old generation banks was migrating from Foxpro to Oracle 9i database and Oracle forms. But not too many companies could afford this at the time so I had to fall back on my programming and internet application development skills to source for freelance jobs. During this time, i did my second Oracle certification as a DBA and moved to an IT firm. From the IT firm, I moved to a new generation bank which was not even using Oracle but Sybase database for their banking Applications (Equinox). I participated in several integrations with e-payment switches, etc and obtained a sysbase DBA certification. From there i moved to another bank as a senior Oracle DBA managing Finacle. I am currently certified as an Oracle Applications DBA and Applications manager managing Oracles suite of products and other vendor applications for a renowned TELCO firm in the Arab Emirates, covering several countries.

Really..Need I say more smiley
