Supreme Court buildings, Lagos in 1959. Wole Soyinka hated these buildings. He preferred the old wooden Supreme Court buildings at Tinubu Square (see You Must Set Forth at Dawn). The old Supreme Court buildings were demolished to make way for the Independence Fountain at Tinubu Square. The Independence Fountain was demolished by the Tinubu Administration to make way for the current fountain.

You can see the old Race Course opposite the Supreme Court buildings. This was before Tafawa Balewa Square (which some describe as a concrete jungle. Lol) was built.

Turnbull Road Ikoyi (1959). This is close to Ikoyi Park. My mum used to tell me about Ikoyi Park. You could go swimming there, the animals and plants, etc.

Now it's Park View Estate cry

A few steps back to the TV section (I was searching for this pic earlier).

Taiwo Ajayi-Lycet and Michael Crawford, "Some Mothers Do Have 'Em" (Frank Spencer).

Does anybody have the "WAI Badge" (or at least a picture of it)? Those little white and green badges that were worn by students, soldiers, public officers, etc in 1984/'85. I'd be very grateful if someone can post a picture of the badge.

Thanks.

Then what's the flag?

By the way, thanks for reminding me, I still have more flags to post. Coming up, traditional flags of Nigeria, but before that...

Michael Taiwo Akinkumi was studying in Britain in 1958, when he heard about a competition to design the new Nigerian flag. He submitted the design below to the committee. The committee chose his design as the winning entry, but removed the sun at the centre of the flag. Thus we got our green-white-green flag.

The flag of the Commander in Chief (a.k.a the Armed Forces Flag). It should not be confused with the Defence Flag.

This flag is usually flown at the various state houses (Marina, Dodan Barracks, Aso Rock Villa, etc) and on the president's limousine.

Berec.

In the early 1980s Berec was what we called batteries (kind of like how today all noodles are called Indomie).

If I remember correctly, the company was owned by Chief M.K.O Abiola.

I loved their souvenir pens (I can't remember how come, but I always had one).

Green Sands Shandy smiley

You either had Maltina or Green Sands Shandy.

I can still remember the tv advert (the guys and girls on the speed boat). "Green sands shandy, the refreshing drink with a (insert forgotten word here) of its own."

There was a party at my house (I think it was my mum's birthday). My little cousin drank huge quantities of Green Sands Shandy and slept off. We tried everything we could do, but nobody could wake him up. We had to carry him into their car.

Somehow, the public didn't know that it contained small quantities of alcohol.

I heard a rumour that it was banned when the government found out aboutt the alcohol content. I don't know if the rumour is true, but it had vanished from the Nigerian market by the mid '80s.
