Jonathan’s reluctance to challenge ceding of Bakassi, impeachable offence —Elechi Amadi

Renowned writer and Nigerian Civil War veteran, Dr Elechi Amadi, has described President Goodluck Jonathan's reluctance to challenge the ceding of the Bakassi area of the country to the Cameroon as abdication of responsibility and an impeachable offence.

Amadi made the statement during a press briefing in his country home, Aluu in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

According to him, the nonchallant attitude so far displayed by the president to the plight of Nigerians in Bakassi is horrifying, especially after the National Assembly has passed a resolution on the matter.

He said Jonathan had no cogent reason not to act, adding that defending any part of Nigeria or any one Nigerian was neither an option for the Commander-in-Chief, nor a personal or arbitrary decision.

While noting that the president would have behaved differently if he were from Bakassi, Elechi argued that among other things, a president was elected to right the wrongs in a country.

He said it was a crazy thing that the Federal Government ceded Bakassi to Cameroun without giving the people of the area opportunity to decide where they want to belong.

“What if the president had come from Bakassi? Would he be so nonchallant about the ceding of Bakassi to Cameroun? Are the people of Bakassi second class citizens? Are they not covered by the UN charter on fundamental human rights? Whose interest is the president serving anyway?

“I cringe with sheer horror at the fact that the Federal Government can abandon without qualms a group of Nigerians, large enough to make up a local government area which is recognised in the constitution, that it can ignore the National Assembly set up by Nigerians on the excuse that their resolutions have no force of law, and that it can treat a weighty matter of this nature with such reprehensible levity.”

“The President should not merely order his Minister of Information to talk to us. The situation calls for a TV broadcast in which he will look us Nigerians in the face and tell us why he is abandoning our compatriots.” he said.

Nigerians across the geographical divIde have all spoken on this Bakassi issue. The Senate, Reps and Judiciary have passed a resolution on dis Bakassi issue. The people of Bakassi have all spoke on dis issue. GEJ is just one man and the Executive is one arm of Govenment.

GEJ should look to Egypt and Libya to see wat the power of the people can accomplish once their mind is set. GEJ was elected to do wat Nigerians want and not the Internationalist imperialist. GEJ is answerable to Nigerians and should give Nigerians wat we have requested. Simply send capable people back to the ICJ.

I don't care about Elechi, National Assembly or GEJ, I just want Bakassi back to Nigeria. Those responsible must act or I will give my support to Bakassi people's threat to make Nigeria ungovernable.

This injustice must not stand!

Bakassi people will make the greatest mistake of their lives IF they wait for GEJ before they appeal the ICJ 2002 decision.

With the help of their governor (Cross River) and new facts, they should get the best lawyers in the world and appeal asap.Their destiny is now in their own hands.Even if you lose the appeal, it'll be on records for the generations unborn that, you fight to the end.

Don't wait for GEJ coz he doesn't even see you as Nigerians anymore.

The way thais Bakassi issue have been handled from d start( going to that ICJ in the 1st instance, the acceptance of the judgements and d yeye 'commitments' we made etc) has been a disgrace and an embarrassment to this nation. GEJ should for God's sake begin d process of appealing asap, though I was thinking recently: we should then be ready to defend and prosecute a warfront that the Cameroonians would almost certainly open within a year of the appeal- either directly or indirectly( through aiding such groups as BH perhaps?)....anyways, we should appeal and get ready

It's almost certain that GEJ ll not appeal. It does not make sense to appeal a judgement you have accepted and actually implemented. Cameroon did not force us to lower our flags in Bakassi. Cameroon did not force us to rush implementation of a judgement that has a lifespan of 10 years. How would it sound if you lost a case that you were not bound to implement the judgement within 10 years but which you had accepted and implemented but then turned around to appeal? What's your chance in that appeal irrespective of the so called new facts?

The best course would have been to reject the judgement and cite a case of bias against the french judge that sat on the panel. We had a golden opportunity but as usual threw it away. Bakassi is lost and gone forever. Don't blame GEJ, blame OBJ.

impeachable offence; that is all we hear these days, why not talk about the criminal offence of those who gave away Our land in the first place. All this talk about appeal after all the commitment made by the joint commission of both countries with agreements and implementations made over the years, will only make us appear as aggressors and troublemakers before the UN and international communities which played observer roles and contributed financially to these process. Again, there are no guarantees with this appeal, must we allow the people of Bakassi to under go this trauma and rejection a 2nd time or we should move them on by properly resettling them with all their full rights and privileges? It is actually the failure of government to settle this people properly that has led to this fresh cries and push for re-visiting, which may only turn out to be a mere academic excercise without any sympathy of the international communities. Well, may God help GEJ, he has to balance being popular with doing the needful.

^ Good question? OBJ should be made to explain the reason for handing Bakassi to Cameroon. GEJ has every right not to want any involvement on the issue.

Jonathan is dumber than a bag of hammers! To think he will do anything is beyond a joke. He doesn't give a damn!

"Nigerians do not want us to cede Bakassi; while we are urging the Federal Government to go on appeal, we will look again at the papers forwarded to us earlier and pass relevant resolutions.”

While no one can guess for now what the ruling of the ICJ would be if Nigeria eventually goes on appeal, the truth of the matter remains that Bakassi indigenes as well as Nigerians around them have rejected the ruling of 2005. The message to the president is to reclaim the territory, not just for economic reasons but also for cultural affinity. Only the events of the future can dictate how this eventually pans out."

“There is room for us to appeal. I think appeal is a line of action that should not be neglected because that is legal, since Nigeria subjected itself to the court. If that is what is available through the court, we should also utilise it. I think that is the most appropriate thing to do at this point in time, if there are other avenues we can explore them, but the most civilised thing now will be to quickly rush on appeal.”
