Hmmm, na wa oo. And here I am seriously praying to God to land one very soon. And I knw He has answered. Now picture this, you wake up every morning just to watch over your father's house all day, which is BTW uncompleted as there isnt money to complete it. you cant even afford a 100naira recharge voucher to recharge ur mtn pulse line in order to get d free 10mb to chek for vacancies online and read ur mails. Your sister in the university comes home at d end of d session and announces to everyone @home dat their schl fees hav been increased significantly, your father turns to you and says "Azuchala gi, obu ginwa kwesiri izu zi nwanne gi na schl"(We hav trained u, it is now ur turn to train ur sister in schl).. And then that bank job comes.....

You are correct guy. I resigned from my banking job of 5 years in January this year though I had no other job to do at that time. It just didn't make sense to continue the work due to the unnecessary stress. Unfortunately two people I used to work with (in different departments) have died between that time and now due to stress-related ailments. One of them actually slumped in the office and died. As a matter of fact, I had an offer from another bank then but I didn't take it up. I was just looking for a lecturing or civil service job.

You can check my past posts to guess which bank I walked away from.

i am sure.the guys friend could be offered gateman job. so its better he stays.where fewer cars come and go with.less salary, than work in the bank with heavy.traffic in the gate.

Why do people complain when it is optional to take up employment. I don't think banker's on the average pass through stress people in the oil(of shore), telecoms, doctor's etc do. They offer 24/7 service and many are always on standby. If one decides not to be self employed then you have to adjust to what you see. There are few positions in Nigeria

@ op

You are quite right to an extent.

I know many people in the last few months who have resigned their banking jobs and gone for other jobs in other firms, accepting a lesser pay than what they earned at the bank. And there gave various reasons for this.

And i still know of some people, alot of them who have rejected banking jobs!

so your friends are sane.Banking jobs is not as it was way back.

mantote: I am a banker and I will advice any young guy that gets banking job now to take it up.But you must watch out cos there are bankers and there are bank workers.if a bank is offering you job through any of theor outsourcing company, run away cos you will be mortgaging your future.as a contract staff, you have no clear cut career pathway, you cannot move from one bank to another or to a similar industry. Also, never take up marketing job in a bank cos the targets are unrealistic and your branch location can be a limiting factor to the type of customers you can get and your boss will hardly allow you to travel long distances to market people you know personally and this people you know personally will not even want to take their funds afar.I will only advise guys who intend to going abroad to school after two yrs to take up marketing jobs since you may eventually lost your job.so use that two year grace period to save. But on a sincere note,a banking career is good if one gets employed as a core staff in any bank that respects human capital as an asset. This is because you will learn about life fast and get good experience that can prepare you for other sectors.A banking job will also enable you to be able to afford payment for professional exams that will prepare you to work in other sectors outside banking in the nearest future.I will rather drive taxi as a self employed gtaduate than work in the civil service except in research institutes, university settings and other semi_corporate civil service settings like firs, efcc, icpc, federal mortgage bank, etc

My dear i find the bolded statements illogical.
There is nothing wrong with civil service .
In my opinion being a civil servant is better than any bank job.
There are some civil servants that earn more than some bank workers wearing designer suit and tie to work.

Next its not all bank jobs that give you experience for other sectors.
There are also other jobs that even pay higher than banks that can afford you enough cash to pay for your professional exams.

Banking jobs are no longer secure whether you are a core staff or not and if one is not careful one can find his/herself, fired for no reason whatsoever.

Taking a banking job is a matter of choice.

@bigboy3: If combining controlling interests in 3 successful businesses and currently working for an enviable organisation in Nigeria is laziness, I agree I am a lazy man. People are so used to abuses that they have become masochists who derive pleasure from being maltreated. For the last 6 months of my stay in the bank, I resumed latest 7am, closed earliest 10pm, worked overnight sometimes, did 9-7 on weekends, etc without any form of compensation. I decided that if I put that much into my business it would payoff. I am happy I took that decision. For your information, I was a specialist working in financial control dept and I got 3 written commendations for industry and commitment over those five yrs. FYI, some people work for 10 yrs and get no commendation at all.

So if you don't believe in yourself or you are ready to take any crap for a few millions, that is your problem.

Bank job are not secured. my dad was a branch manager in one stupid bank and he just got sacked cos he didn't meet his TOO HIGH target. banks need you to work ur ass out just to satisfy them. some goals are unattainable but they don't wanna believe that.

Is it because your dad was sacked that makes the bank stupid or u mean ur dad had bin working in a stupid bank?

but really their targets are quite unreasonable though they tell them to make atleast 10% of the target, that 10% is still unrealistic. sad

Then you adjust your target to 10% of 10% of your initial target. That will give you 1% of your original target. LWKMD

The bank's service generally isn't so good and they dont have a good image in the face of the public. How on earth do you expect the managers to get people to open account in a bank that doesn't fall in their definition of a good bank.

Read all d comments here and i saw reasons wit som ppl.dos ppl dat resigned did so cos dey dey got stressed out but had it been dey were still @ home dey wuld give anytin to just stat a job even if its dat same bank job dey quit.banks on dia own side r selfish, imagine my frend doin a contract mktn job 4 fcmb 4 25k.dats not fair but she took it so dat she will gain experience and plans on quitn soon.me am a fresh graduate tired of stayn home.if i see any bank job i'l take it(apart 4rm mktn).i kw am very pretty gal and also a gud gal, notin will make me to sell my body to any1 all in d name of opening acct.my point is,we all kw wat we r capable of,if ur body can sustain bank stress u take it.if not leave it.if u just nid d moni @ d moment take d bank job and quit wen u have achieved ur aim.as 4 me i'l take bank job cos i want to start my career and i really nid 1.wen d stress is too much i'l just quit by den i'v made som moni or maybe gotten a better job.biliv me stayn home is not a gud tin.

Me too I turned down job offer by Polaris just last month, because nowadays youth should go out and hustle. There is no way I can sit in a place from 8 to 5 while that is the time for me to build my future.

How does a person become a core staff at a bank from entry level. What stage should the person go through?
Is it bank teller, customer service representative, or he or she should go for an executive training program.

I came here to read comments so as to help my decision making if I should accept Access bank offer or not. I'm currently working in a good place, at least with a good salary to start with. Considering the stress, long hours of working, Lagos traffic and overtime in banking sector, and in addition to all what have been discussed here so far. I have come to a conclusion that I'll reject the offer, not minding the official car allowance.

I just believe having control over your time is very important, I need to build my career, I won't allow one bank to cage me.

Thanks everyone for the contributions so far, you've just helped me in making my decision.
