Universities claim British reputation damaged following UK immigration changes

The Russell Group, a coalition of 24 of the UK's most prestigious universities, has claimed the damage done by UK immigration policy changes is already being felt as application rates drop.

The Russell Group claim the UK's international reputation as a place to study has been damaged due to changes to UK immigration policy.

As part of its effort to reduce net immigration to the UK to the 'tens of thousands' by the end of the current Parliament, the Government has made drastic changes to UK visa and immigration policy - some of which have affected international students.

Policy changes which came into effect in April place more stringent requirements on English language abilities and remove the right to work following graduation.

Universities have consistently argued that international student numbers, which are worth billions of pounds to the British economy every year, should be removed from net migration stats but the Government has remained firm.

The issue reached a head last month when London Metropolitan University's (LMU) ability to vouch for international students was revoked, leaving over 2,000 students with the prospect of finding alternative institutions to study at, or returning home.

The LMU is yet to be resolved by the Russell Group has claimed the damage has already been done and UK visa applications from Indian students have already dropped by as much as 30% in the wake of the scandal.

Craig Calhoun, recently appointed director of the London School of Economics (LSE), said in the aftermath of the LMU scandal, prospective international students "are worried about the possibility the Government might suddenly and without notice revoke visas."

"If you are a bright student and you have offers from the LSE and Cambridge and Harvard and you haven't got a visa for the UK, what are you going to do?" asked Mr Calhoun, adding that the LMU scandal has done 'untold reputational damage' to the country's international education industry.

Ministers claim the changes are justified due to high levels of abuse within the system; foreign citizens apply to university courses, enter the country and then seek employment instead of studying.

Marissa Murdock, casework manager at the UK Visa Bureau, says ministers need to be aware of the impact policy changes can have.

"The changes made to policy so far have been very heavy handed and the drop in application numbers was predictable," said Ms Murdock.

"Everyone agrees the system needs to become more stringent to limit abuse, but it shouldn't come at the cost of one of the country's most profitable and well respected industries."

This present uk government is a cracker governmet, they are all brats, cut away from reality, because they have never been in a situation where they lack. How can an economy be bouyant when they keep cutting jobs, cutting funds and restricting cash to the people, aswell tightening the very lucrative business of foreign students, who spend their hard cash to boost uk economy?

I dont no why people think population is bad for economy,i personally think it the best for economy, because more people means more activities, and more activities means more demands and more demands means more deals, and as long as it is monitored,it will keep spinning like a wheel wheel that never stops, until the end of time.

The current UK govt is totally out of touch and pretends to protect the interest of the British public. Once they have economic and social
problems they are quick to blame or crack down on anything foreign in order to appease to the sentiments of their people.
They have only succeeded in shooting themselves in the "foot." Nigerians have other places to choose from and not subject themselves
to draconian immigration laws.

That's the dangerous effect of voting in a conservative government that rolls out anti immigration laws anyhow. If our educational system was ok in Nigeria we would stay in our country and the British man will not insult us.

Unfortunately the magazine did not quote the extent of damage...

The Tories and the white majority British public share a common perspective - they don't want to rainbow the demographics by allowing asian and african faces even at the price of sustain growth and development- they foolishly try to attract Europeans who probably prefer their own countries or whose country's quality of life thrashes the UK's. They more likely attract Europeans from poor parts who are either disinterested in higher education or will more likely compete with the unschooled white British majority for the scarcely available non-, low- and semiskilled jobs.

Truth be told, I wouldn't blame the UK government for this decision.

After that uprising in UK that williams and his wife (then fiancee) were attacked, I knew there will be very stiff laws on the UK students and immgiration policies because the UK government kept emphasizing that their citizens were influenced by external source. They believed their citizens are averagely cowardice and respect to royals to the fullest and such attacks could only have been instigated by external sources.

Well that said, people are fond of misusing opportunities given to them. USA visa policies were never this stiff during the Clinton erra, but prior to his tenure end, 65% of crimes commited by students were traced to be from foreign students.

Also the same with the Canadian Visa policies, Cyprus, Ukraine, and even of late Malaysia.

I don't want to mention any country. But citizens of a particular country is known to also affect the others because of the misdeeds.

Immigration is a VERY delicate issue that needs to be handled with car, nonetheless, wisdom can ONLY be applied when making decision. Rash and hasty decisions such as this does have financial rippled effect; this is a case of solving the symptoms rather than the core problem itself. You can ONLY curb nuisance, you can NEVER remove it - If people are abusing the system, hand down a strict criminal punishment or use social enlightenment to correct the issue, BUT, placing strict bar on the UK visa just drives the traffic elsewhere.

An average international student probably pays abt 20,000 pounds on fees and board, annually, imagine where just 10,000 students look elsewhere, UK looses approximately about 200million pounds annually. As the number increase and graduates further, like they rightly said, UK looses tens of billion of pounds in foreign money. This is money their economy is losing out on, I guess the utilitarian rule doesn't really apply, depending on how u look at it.

Foreign students spurn UK universities after immigration curbs

Russell Group warns that tougher visa rules are leading to a drop in overseas applicants

International students are spurning the UK's most prestigious universities as a re sult of Government immigration curbs, The Independent can reveal.

Some courses at universities in the Russell Group – which represents 24 top institutions, including Oxford and Cambridge – have seen a drop of up to 30 per cent in applications from Indian students. The impact of strict new visa rules has been compounded by the negative publicity that followed the revoking of London Metropolitan University's (LMU) licence to teach overseas students last month. The drop in applications for courses starting this month also follows the murder of Indian student Anuj Bidve in Manchester last Christmas. But university leaders said the Government's immigration clampdown was the decisive factor.

Dr Wendy Piatt, director general of the Russell Group, said: "As ministers crack down on abuse of the system, they must be careful about the messages they send to the world's best and brightest students." Under new visa regulations that came into force in April, students face tougher questions about their destination, limits on their ability to work and harder questions on their English-language capability. The Russell Group says overseas-student numbers must be maintained because educating non-EU citizens is "a major UK export industry" that brings in £2.5bn a year in fees. The application figures come as Craig Calhoun, the new director of the London School of Economics, spoke of his "concern" about overseas recruitment in an interview with The Independent. He revealed there has been a "modest drop" in the acceptance of places from international students because "people are worried about the possibility the Government might suddenly and without notice revoke visas".

"If you are a bright student and you have offers from the LSE and Cambridge and Harvard and you haven't got a visa for the UK, what are you going to do? Every year we have students turned down for visas for reasons we can't fathom." He added that the LMU affair – where the university has won the right for a judicial review of the situation – had done "untold reputational damage" to the UK higher education system. His comments, echoed by other universities, are the first signs of the impact immigration controls are having on student numbers. At the University of East Anglia, Professor Edward Acton, its vice-chancellor, said "negative vibes" towards international students and academics were putting people off applying. The university had already had one "near genius" mathematician unable to take up a post because of visa restrictions. "The regulations said we couldn't appoint him if anybody within the EU could do the job," he said. "There was – but they didn't take into account a stellar Russian who could get you a Nobel Prize." That restriction has now been lifted but Professor Acton said the repercussions could still be felt as his colleagues received the message it was impossible to get a visa to work in England.

As much as I respect the opinions of people on this thread, I think there is a lot of hypocrisy going on up here.

Ever country has a right to do what it deems best for its populace. That's their first responsibility.

Come to think of it even within our own borders, in a country where we claim to practice federalism, where do you see large flocks of immigrants (now I mean people from other states) aside lagos. Every state is so sensitive about having large flocks of non indegenes in their state to the extent that some even started sacking those in the state govt employ. And can't start to talk about the number of crisis that has resulted from Indigenes vs settlers issue all over the country.

Even SA over there that does not have half as much intended immigrants from all over the world as the UK, have you not heard of riots over there that resulted from there unwillingnes to entertain more foreigners in their land ?

Am sure this is not too good news for those having the desire to immigrate to the UK but we don't have to slate them for doing what they presently think is the right step.

And by the way, the Rusell group are just talking as business man. I think a study/research should be conducted to ascertain the effect of this policies on the larger society in the long run. That should be the determinant factor.

I knew this would happen. PSW was one of the major reasons international students flocked into the uk. After they removed it, I withdrew my application and started looking elsewhere, I don't see why after spending some 7 million naira, I won't be given the opportunity to earn some of it back.

Let them just keep introducing tougher immigration policies, it will come back to haunt them.
