berem: did they force him to give them tips? Did they point a gun at him to beg him? I mean this happens all the time in airports, banks, ministries, hospitals etc.so how is it an embarrasment? Its a nigerian tradition that cannot be wiped out now or in the nearest future.so he better starts getting used to it!

Interesting @ the bolded.i guess kidnapping and looting is also a nigerian tradition that cannot be wiped out now or in the nearest future?.Dont rationalize something wrong to the extent that it looks right. You are aware as much as I do that if you dont offer tips to public officers, expect delays because you no "settle",and that is the culture/tradition of unprofessionalism you expect people to get used to?.

Its not just Owerrri or Nigeria, its an African problem. Anyone that uses Kotoka Airport in Ghana knows the Ghana immigration officers are beggars, i normally keep small 5 or 10 dollar notes for them. Immigration officers in Lagos are beggars as well. OP should learn to give, i give them freely when i have, and they dont force you to give.

mrkels: Berem is a sick fellow everyone on nairaland knows that. I really didn't witness those coperate beggars when I served there in owerri but the thing about the bike is abousolutely true. You ll beckon on 1, 35 would come and get you and charge extremely high prices, my first time I paid 1k , when I saw the distance wasn't much I never gave anyone there more than 150 naira to the junction. Let me tell you something about owerri people, once they see you are a stranger expecially a 'corper' and do no understand the BS igbo they are speaking, their prices would increase by 300%. So glad am out of that town! A town in which any office you enter looking to make your PPA, the first question they ll ask you is ''WHERE ARE YOU FROM'' tribal bigots.

and u think u are d only one that has served his fatherland, huh?
what of me that served in d North where they will sell items to u @ a higher rate than to their own people just because u be corper (only ur face will give u away as a FG pikin).
It happens everywhere, not just in Igboland.

Stick to d topic pal, don't tell us ur experiences as a youth corper.

berem: and what are you gonna do to curb the situation? If you know you can't give,no be by force! Na naija we dey bros.sometimes they ask for tips to give you better quality services.this is Nigeria! You gaz shine your eyes wella!

Hahahahah.
But u know they can be funny @ times when u refuse to give?
Methinks it is outrightly unprofessional.

They are everywhere. When you usually board a bus from Ughelli(Delta state) to PH,you will see what I mean. They will tell you their manifest is filled up and the next thing they tell you is to give them something so they can put you in a bus that will leave early.

The same thing happened to me in lagos airport, i was escorted by one of my cousin, who happens to be a navy officer, the man checking my bag asked the naval officer to move far away from us, not knowing he is navy officer, my cousin was some how angry but he move away not far away from us, then the man asked me of bribe just like that, i just put my hand inside my pocket to bring out the money, then my cousin asked me what he demanded from me, i told him, he said don't give him, he just pulled out his id card and show it to him, that's how i escaped from that wicked person.

I flew from Owerri to Abuja 2 weeks ago and I was as nauseated as you are. The scanning lady all but asked me to "dash" her my liquid soap which was in my bag. The one who checked luggages asked me "anything for breakfast?"

This happens everywhere. Lagos Airport is No1 in begging. What got me sooo infuriated about the Owerri case was the state of the airport. I had gotten there 2hrs before my flight and I was made to sit in the hottest departure lounge ever.

I was soooo irritated, I drew the attention of airport officials to the heat and to my utter dismay, NONE of the fans were working. Forget about ACs, those ones na decoration. Worst airport I've been in a lonnnnng time!

Some Nigerians should be deprived the means of coming online. If you dont understand what the OP is trying to portray, why dont you ask? Or did he/she tell you he/she is an English man/woman? Very pathetic!

To the matter: It is quite unfortunate that a lot of Nigerians behave in such way. It is not the case of salary not being paid, but what we Yoruba people call "ojukokoro", "ainitelorun". Lack of contentment and ethical value is the bane of all this rubbish. How can you assume I am a rich man because I am flying? Very stupid and shameful mentality down there.

It became a "Nigerian tradition" when "longer-throats" and all kinds of f00ls with Naira signs in their eyes swarmed the metropolis. That is not the Nigeria I grew up in. You may not know it; I guess you are part of the hungry generation.

Are you saying that it is ok to abuse the English language just because you are not an English man? Please what is Nigeria’s official language of communication?

Afterall, they are native speakers, yet a lot of them murder their own language in writing. Atleast you got her message didnt you? This behaviour of correcting people's English at the detriment of the message being conveyed, is very pathetic and childish at the very least. Oro pari!

As a child, I was taught to listen to news and read books to learn/improve my spoken and written English. The world has evolved, and nearly everyone is on the internet these days. It’s only fair that we write articles that people can learn from. When ‘Graduates’ speak/write wrong English we are quick to point fingers and call them half-baked, but we all contribute to this decay.
My point is; whatever is worth doing is worth doing very well... some people here may not benefit from the story the OP is narrating but it would be nice if some people learn new words/sentence construction from the story the OP has written.

Nigerians are so down that we lack the smallest dignity or self-respect. When i travel, i present my ODC when asked for identification. It gets on them when they realize someone who works in the same environment as them can afford to book for air travel so i get my change in full... Either out of shame, jealousy or anger i don't bother to know... And the irony of it is people travelling willingly give tips without you asking when you do your job very well and nobody frowns on that. But eh, begging is a profession in Nigeria... My pay is good, asides that i'll never ASK
Re: Working Class Beggers In Owerri Int'l Airport by werone: 1:19pm On Oct 15, 2012
All you people supporting begging are the ones killing this country in your very small ways.
If they are not paid or paid enough. They should go to the road side, so we know they are actuaclly beggers who need donations from people instead of harrassing people with that their bad behaviour.
Some wll go as far as calling you names when you don't give them anything. This is BAD. Call a spade a spade. PERIOD

Its funny how a lot of people on this thread are saying its a norm and the op shouldn't have been bothered...he should have just given them if he had or shut his mouth if he doesn't have to give.
Seriously??
Something is very wrong and we are supposed to either keep quiet or encourage it?
Smh!!
The way people reason is so shameful...
Damn!!

...I thought I was alone in this.
Same experience, same airport on 30th Sept. Disgusting it was when they kept asking without shame...gimme this...gimme that...gimme what not. It's shameful. They didn't even care what manner of passengers we were: gentlemen, SSS or Terrorists.
