EFFORTS by the National Boundary Commission, NBC, to demarcate the maritime boundary between Nigeria and Cameroon have run into a legal storm as leaders of Bakassi have taken legal action against the commission.

The suit, which was filed at an Abuja High Court, yesterday, may be the first of the series of legal actions which the aggrieved people of Bakassi want to take against individuals, governments and agencies that worked directly, or indirectly, to take away their land, endanger their cultural heritage and rendered them as refugees in their own country.

The people of Bakassi are challenging the NBC which is expected to start the process of demarcation of the new boundary between Nigeria and Cameroon based on the 1975 Marowa Declaration, which set the controversial Ngo/Coker line which jettisoned the April 1893 and the 1954 international boundary between Nigeria and Cameroon.

The old boundary sets the boundaries and co-ordinates at the Rio Del Re Estuary, which was concealed in the memorandum of facts which Cameroon took to the International Court of Justice in 1994.

Leader of Save Bakassi Group, Mr. Maurice Ekong, told Vanguard that the people of Bakassi had decided to take legal action against the NBC because the commission’s actions are illegal and unconstitutional.

He said: “President Goodluck Jonathan went to New York last month to tell the world that he believed in the rule of law. We want to test that mantra of the president in the case of Bakassi because there are several issues here that require the interpretation of legal minds. First, we know that the Green Tree Agreement, GTA, which they have been using has not been domesticated by the National Assembly, the highest law making arm of government in Nigeria.

If this case can be tendered in the international court, i advise them to do just that. Except they did not know that in the recent past, the judiciary in nigeria have been for those in power, the cabal and the highest bidder. The impact have resulted in people taking laws in to their hands. Relying on those corrupt ridden minds( the nigerian judiciary) is a wasting of time.

I get where the Bakassi people are coming from, but this isnot about GEJ stopping Bakassi from beign handed to cameroun,it should be about them beign resettled properly and adequately to suit their lifestyle and heritage.

Good move, at least a good place to start. There are still those in government and house of assembly who believe that the executive was wrong in accepting the ICJ judgement and ceding Bakassi to Cameroon.

Bakassi is no longer part of Nigeria, hence the indigenes are no more Nigerians, we should stop this habit of jumping to conclusions and rushing to castigate our country over sentimental issues! If they have a case, it is with the ICJ who gave the judgement not the Nigerian government. In light of their present predicament, their agitation should be that they be given autonomy and independence from both cameroun and Nigeria alike, and recognised as such by the world! The agitation to remain in nigeria is not reasonable!!! Public opinion is in their favor so what are they waiting for

It's funny how we keep stating that the people of Bakassi should do this, the people of Bakassi should do that when, actually, before the seeding to Cameroon, Bakassi indigence were Nigerian people and we all should have shown solidarity with them. It was our fight not just their fight alone. Still, now that the West has given the territory to Cameroon (actually it is galling even typing this, where are all those people who keep arguing that Nigeria is a Whitman's creation? Such people argue as if such a thing couldn't happen in today's world and yet, before our very eyes the Whitman has done it again. He has carved out part of Nigeria and given it to French puppet Cameroon)those of us who can wherever in Nigeria they are from, we should help fight whatever decision those of our people living in Bakassi choose.
