Do Nigerian Christians Lack The Word Power To Argue Logically? by ezme(m): 11:12pm On Oct 21, 2012 |
I have been questioning my belief system in the last one year and this brings me regularly to the Religion section. I always check out topics that are religion-based that make front page. There is a trend I have come to see on here. The average Christian poster here cannot follow through an argument without resorting to verbal assaults. This is very evident in threads where renowned pastors come under fire or when tithing is criticized. Personally, I'm of the opinion that if a person takes to verbal assault to support an argument, the pointers are the person or the argument is weak or maybe both. I think the non-tithing Christians are more logical when making premises and sometimes the atheists too. Anyone with an analytical mindset would shift base from just reading how pathetic most Christians sound when they argue. I think Christians should change their approach when posting here if not they would keep losing to the atheists. Arguments are won by premises that leads to logical conclusions and not necessarily by the strength in number of the opposition. 2 Likes |

Mots xtians would win more arguments, the problem is that faith 'thing' gets in the way... and um most christians have little knowledge of the Bible compared to the anti-tithers and atheists... |

@op I think its the other way round. Most atheist here can't argue logically without resorting to insults. They ask question, and after giving them an honest reply, they begin to rain insults on you. This place needs to be sanitized. 2 Likes |

@OP, I agree most believers on NLand don't follow arguments logically. There are reasons for this 1. All Christians are not Teachers: there are 5 fold ministries in the church as identified in the Bible. They include Pastor, Evangelist, Teacher, Apostle and Prophet(Eph 4:11). They all have there different areas of specialization. That's why organizations have spokesman. Unfotunately, nairaland is not an organization but a free for all forum. Take the medical profession for instance, there are questions/medical issues a paediatric cannot handle even though he is a medical doctor. That's why a General Hospital is often recommended where you meet all specialties. The Church (not Nairaland)is a spiritual general Hospital where you get treatment for all your spiritual issues 2. Most believers don't study their Bibles: Paul adviced his protégé Timothy to 'Study in other to show himself approved, a workman that should not be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth'2 Tim 2:15. Due to lack of study, most believers are ashamed of some questions they have no answers to and resort to insults. You can never hear me insult anyone, no not even on Nairaland. Believers should not do that, Jesus even says that if you call your brother a fool you are in the danger of hell fire(Matt 5:23). To insult is Islam not Christian 3.The Bible is for learning not argument: James advices that you receive the Word of God with meekness(James 1:21). If you are not humble enough to learn, you will always take the position of argument and never understand. You wonder why Jesus called Peter and other Apostles "babes"(Matt 11:25)? because unlike the scribes and pharisees, they were willing to learn The Bible also says that the word of God is Spirit abd you need to be spiritually solvent to understand all of it. 1 Cor 2:9-11). 4. The Bible is hid from unbelievers: the bible says in 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 "If the Gospel is hid(not understood) it is hidden from them that are perishing in whom the god of this world(satan)has blinded their eyes so they cannot see the light of the glory of the gospel..." I have more reasons to give but my advice to you is this 1. Don't come to Nairaland looking for answers about christianity 2. Give your life to Christ and receive His Word with meeknes of heart 3. before you study the word pray that God should open your eyes of understanding (Ps 119:18-19;Eph 1:17) I'm a teacher of God's word and would soon open a thread to answer most questions that Nairalands ask 1 Like |

It's a good question to raise . It's been a matter of concern. We to Need to fight in Gods name . There's a binlical way to communicate truth. It's in love and meekness . Not strife. Anyone who goes about it otherwise does not really have truth. It's an earthly wisdom . It's carnal. James 3:15-17 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. Galatians 6:1 1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. |

You are heads and shoulders above all those who bring christianity to ridicle on this forum by preaching false doctrines that can not be defended biblically. At the end of the day you resort to twisting scriptures or quoting it out of cntext to Justify your position instead of standing for the biblical tuth. #God is watching. |

Techwriter: @OP, I agree most believers on NLand don't follow arguments logically. There are reasons for this The portion I flagged red is entirely unnecessary to prove your point. I think a public forum like Nairaland creates the opportunity to get diverse views and make you discern arguments that follow logically. I have gone the way of speaking to people in theological school and noticed how aggressive they get while trying to prove a point that doesn't follow logically. Most of them just say things handed down to them without going on this journey of self-discovery with an open mind. As long as what you mean by your second advice is not to accept without questions what any pastor would tell me then I would look forward to the threads you would open to respond to issues raised. |

@OP, I believe that logic many times cannot come into play with God's instructions. However, you could say the average Nigerian is used to insulting people so it goes beyond whether Christians, Muslims, atheists etc arguing logically or not. Going through lots of posts on NL, you would know those who argue with so much insults, anger and bitterness and those who will never resort to that. For me, it depends on the individual and generally how they relate in their every day life. If I do not buy your views but repsect your view and I give mine and you refuse to respect it, I just ignore you. The issue of tithe has been expounded here time and time again and its a continuous cycle of insults, name-calling and this actually has come from those who do not tithe contrary to your allegation above. Just take another look at such threads. Besides tithe, many prove they know everything more than others and a such those do not have a say in the matter. A good example to know those lurking and waiting for opportunities to insult is that they barge into a thread as soon as they see the person they have been waiting for and rather than face the topic, they start castigating like it is their ministry on earth. We needn't make enemies of everyone that doesn't share the same views with us. We should all learn and chose to share our views in love and with respect. 1 Like |

@op, have an open mind on NL. There are many types of christians on nairaland. By their threads. You shall know them. If you see a thread shouting for ppl to pay tithe, u shall surely see me there criticizing. Nice thread by the way. But you have the holy spirit to teach you also, and your salvation is from Jesus. Not from nairaland or any other forum or blog. |

1) Faith versus Logic who do you think will win the argument? 2) 2'000 year old bible full of inconsistencies versus 21st century science who do you think will win the argument 3) Evidence of creation versus Evidence of evolution who do you think the argunent? 4) Evidence of the Garden Of Eden Noah's Ark where Jesus was nailed to the cross versus evidence of Pre Historic animals, neanderthal Man Reptiles, and Mammals etc who will win the argument? 5) Spiritual healing versus Medicine Science and Technology who will win the argument? You cannot use logic when trying to explain away your faith, spiritual matters or inconsistencies in the bible unlike we atheists so you guys are bound to lose arguments right from the start in my opinion 1 Like |

Our faith is not meant for argument but for transformation. Most of us Christians can argue logically but we don't engage in such because it doesn't win souls to Christ and we are admonished to refrain from vain arguments. |

Goshen360: Our faith is not meant for argument but for transformation. Most of us Christians can argue logically but we don't engage in such because it doesn't win souls to Christ and we are admonished to refrain from vain arguments. Sometimes you get caught between people teaching twisted doctrines and you are moved to state that this isn't correct using the scripture as the standard. I have been accused of being confrontational in Church. Maybe arguing was a wrong choice of word, but I believe from discussions we always get to see things in perspective. |

I'm disappointed you'll leave out the atheists because they too are quite insultive. I generally don't insult unless I'm very annoyed or I'm insulted. Besides there are Christians here that make a good case. You have Mr Anony for example. |

^^^ Atheists are equally insulting, i doubt Religion is a factor, it is simply Human Nature to WIN by whatever means necessary. it is a poor virtue that seeps out when the race gets too tight and you need that last ounce of juice to upset your closest competitor. @OP is right though. I doubt most Christians are Researchers who study the Word in the real sense, trying to discern Wisdom from the Knowledge presented and applying it wisely to the discourse at hand. it is often for personal affirmations, sought-blessings etc. there are tomes of wisdom in there, so long as you can avoid the Social controversies that you can neither justify with certainty (not faith) 1 Like |
