CAF warns Mali, Cote d’ Ivoire over match-fixing

Confederation of African Football (CAF) has warned the Eagles of Mali and Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire, who meet in their last Group B match of the on-going Africa Nations Cup on Tuesday, to avoid fixing the result.
Both countries need a draw to qualify for the quarter-finals as Cote d’Ivoire lead the group with six points and Mali follow with four. One point from a draw would, therefore, ensure the Ivoriens top while one point will put the Malians beyond the winless Eagles who at best could hope for a high margin of victory over Benin.

CAF observed that the two teams may have resolved to put out second string sides in a deliberate attempt to take the sting out of the clash and ensure safe passage for both countries from Francophone Africa. While the continental football governing body has little influence over team selection, it stressed its preparedness to stamp out untoward activities in the African game.

The conduct of both teams will be observed on Tuesday and compared to previous performances to determine the level of influence on the outcome, NationSport learned.

Tuesday’s match is believed to be decisive game. CAF disclosed that it would not hesitate to sanction both teams if eventually they bring the game into disrepute.
