PDP-Dominated Senate Committee on Education Rates OSUN as The BEST in Nigeria

The Upper Chamber of the National Assembly on Tuesday challenged other governors of the federation to learn from the educational policies being put in Osun if indeed, they are set their states on the path of educational glory.

The Chairman Senate Committee on Education, Chief Uche Chukwumerijie, while leading the Senate Committee on Education on an oversight visit to the state others, must drop their party affiliations and sentiments because what is happening in Osun is capable of rescuing the country’s rotten education sector.

This was even as the Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola held that Nigeria will not make an appreciable progress if her focus is only on the executive arm of government. Senator Chukwumerijie who led other members including the wife of the former Governor of Lagos state, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Prof. Olusola Adeyeye, Senator Atiku Bagudu among others said the visit is a mark of respect and solidarity in showing appreciation for the wonders and feat that the young administration of Aregbesola has achieved in Osun.

In his words, "The states and the country owed Governor Aregbesola a lot of gratitude for promptly laying a formidable foundation for education in the state.

I will like to use this opportunity to advise other states irrespective of your political affiliation. You must drop your ego and learn from the people oriented projects and programmes of Governor Aregbesola.

” The senator described the collapse of education in the country as a national challenge and appealed to all to muster the courage to address the decay in the educational sector. According to the lawmaker, "The governor of Osun is God-sent to his people.

Aregbesola, as a fresh governor, has shown that he is a serious-minded person. For the first time, the education policy of Ogbeni Aregbesola remains the best in the country, even ahead that of Lagos State.

" Responding, Governor Aregbesola held that for the country to progress, the interest of the people must be considered before any decision is taken; stating that parliamentary system of government is the essence of democracy.

He said, "The best form of political activity is in the parliament, our nation will not make appreciable progress if it focuses only on the executive, at least the parliament is where ideas are generated, they have total representative and support of the people.

"Parliamentary system is the essence of democracy. The assembly of the people must not be an expression but it must put into practise. For a country to have a meaningful development progress, it must not be a one-sided means of power." The governor averred.

Speaking on education, Aregbesola said when he got into power, his intention was to close down schools for about a year because of what he met. "What was on ground was dilapidated school buildings not fit for human habitation.

The conditions of teachers were nothing to write home about plus the condition of other infrastructure." He urged the committee not to be afraid to tell the president that there is a problem in the educational sector, adding that the decadence in the sector must be arrested to rescue students from the problem of not having sound education.

Aregbesola held that the basis of growth for any country is sound education and that Osun is committed to provision of genuine and sound education for its citizenry hence the commitment of huge resources to make sure that its pupils will rank among the best in Nigeria.

Nigeria is indeed a great country where award is given for programmes not implemented. Just think of a great programme or project, put it down on paper and ur award is sure.

But then, Osun is the state with highest number of unserious students in the world. They are poor accademmically.

Coming from the State official website, i don't expect to read anything different. Abia State official website paid similar glowing tribute on the Governor's 'achievements' but the people on ground knows otherwise.

I live in Osun state. I don't know what ds committee saw dat led to ds award. Maybe what Aregbe wrote on paper as his education policy but which he is yet to implement in almost 2 years. The only thing happening in d education sector is d builiding of a new block of classrooms at Alekuwodo in Osogbo & d only one completed. There have been massive destruction of classrooms all over d state without any hope of being rebuilt. As a result many students are cramped or holed up in classrooms thereby making learning almost impossible. because when u have Pry 1-3 in d same classroom what do u expect. Infact my community fiercely rejected d demolition in our school. We said build urs first b4 demolishing d ones on ground. I'm yet to understand how ds calls for an award o. Also the promise of giving tablets or laptop to every pupil in osun state has remain a mere promise for almost 2 years. I really don't understand d basis for d award.

The senate committee on education lead by the highly respected Chief Uche Chukwumerejie have spoken. He who has ear let him hear what the committee have said with OPEN MINDS irrespective of tribe, religion, ethnic or party affiliations. Google is your friend.

I stayed in Osogbo for a very long time and I can't tell u authoritatively that no school in that big village will ask u to teach English language with Yoruba.
