I am considering what to study after my first degree (HND bus/adm) with a good lecturing prospect. Is PGD in GIS & remote sensing a good choice? Please I need your advice and the possible Institutions that offers the course. I will appreciate if I can have an idea of the cost and duration. |

Hello, I am currently studying for a masters degree in GIS @ unilorin. Reading through your post one line caught my attention, you will like to go into academics (lecturing) right? Now, GIS is a professional course that exposes you to how geographical/spatial data can be used to solve human problems with great precision. Because it is professional, most specialists do not take on PHD studies and I doubt if any Nigerian university offers one, so if you venture into academics, you might most likely hit a 'glass ceiling' mid way into your career. But if you decide to go professional, then you must make certain of one thing, just like other professionals you need to be good at what you do and then am sure you will make it because gis is increasing in its relevance to most industries ranging from oil, telecoms and banking to urban planing, environmental management and surveying. As for the universities offering pgdgis/mgis courses, you have a lot to choose from unilorin, unilag, u.I etc. Duration for pgdgis is 12months with a maximum of 18months and the cost ranges from 200-250k Goodluck to you. 2 Likes |

Thank you very much for your information. I found it very useful. However, I am not very specific about lecturing even though I have a passion for it. my main concern is to be able to pursue a career after my studies and also have the capability to earn good money to provide for myself n dependent. Please, is there a vital role that GIS & remote sensing professional/ specialist plays in the aviation industry? Again, my HND is in BUS ADM, is that eligible for a PGD admission? Once thanks for your vital contribution. 1 Like |

Please is Intergrity_food this same person as moral intergrity? With your background in Biz Adm, one would have expected you to use the GIS skills you acquire for Biz logistic purposes. For example Spatial Technologies in Lagos recently handled a project for a bank (I think UBA) on the best possible distribution pattern for their ATM machines. However, since your interest is in Aviation then that's what I'll discuss. With a solid knowlegde of GIS you will be able to fit into the aviation sector either in Transport Logistics/ Travel patterns or Risk Assessment and Management. Now this is just a tip of the iceberg, if you eventually take on a GIS degree you will be able to decide on what section of the aviation sector you prefer. Also, sometime in June I had an interview at the Airforce base in Kaduna and immediately I introduced my self as a geographer the officers started discussing GIS and how it has greatly helped their work. So there you go my friend, GIS is a great field, Have at it! As regards your background enabling you to study GIS, I think it should (not authoritative though) but I'll confirm. How good are your basic computer skills, have you any flare for geographic studies and research? 3 Likes |

I have since had an eye on GIS cos i geo-biased too. Hw much is a masters program and duration. On a lighter note, why answer palm tree? Sounds more like what the ibos will do telling u it's because of its significance. |

moral_integrity: @ Palmtree: Thank you for your contribution. The last time I read anything about geography was for my School cert but my computing skill is good. I asked if you have the flare for geographic research/studies, I'll assume your answer is yes. So welcome into the GIS world, and if you eventually take on the program kindly let me know as we might be useful to each other. You'll never know. |

GIS is relevant to your career path, once you obtain your CISA cert try and take a certificate course in GIS. |

PalmTree:me know as we might be useful to each other. You'll never know. Thank you palmtree; i hope to commence next year by God's grace. Is it possible to get both ( GIS/RS) in one package? |
Re: Gis And Remote Sensing: Is There Lecturing/job Prospect? by PalmTree(m): 7:31pm On Dec 08, 2012 |
Yeah if you search well. I av heard of applied RS in Futminna but most universities around offer PgdGis and Mgis. Just widen ur options and while at it try to get familiar with some software packages like ArcGis and Arcview, Ilwis too can come in handy for some raster applications. Goodluck. |

Geomac: Aite, thanks for the update. @intergrity food, you wont be able to go for that course because of your background of study. I'll advice that you settle for PgdGis then you may work towards a masters. |

@ palm tree. Am very glad to have stormed on Ur post. Am a recent graduate of Geography from UNIMAID. am yet to serve (nysc) also planning on an advanced studies too in GIS & Remote Sensing my questions are. what d difference btwn MGIS and MScGIS, What is d study like in uniilorin? What d cost in ur school. And are u ment to choose an area of specialization ?. and do u mind if we communicate via email? |
Re: Gis And Remote Sensing: Is There Lecturing/job Prospect? by PalmTree(m): 10:52am On Feb 16, 2013 |
liftemeupolord : My email is tomimgis@gmail.com, but for the benefit of other readers that might be interested let me answer some of your questions. The difference between MGIS and MscGIS depends on the institution, some schools adopt the academic aspect of GIS hence MscGIS, while others prefer the professional aspect hence MGIS. However they basically do the same thing. |

Hi Palm tree, am so fortunate to have come across your re-post to the guy crossing from biz admin to GIS. I’ve got my BSc in computer science. Av got basic programing skills. Yet, I am the type who finds it difficult sitting and stirring at the computer screen all day long. Before I got admitted to my first degree, I had once the time dreamt of Geology but found myself in the field of computer after my uncle in the military had told me to choose the computer science in the Military screening exam I wrote but didn’t pass at that time. I tried figuring my Love, past and future in Military carrier when I read in your post “sometime in June I had an interview at the Air force base in Kaduna and immediately I introduced myself as a geographer the officers started discussing GIS and how it has greatly helped their work.” I am considering my MSc before joining the force, will my background in SC make it an easy thing to understanding GIS and have good grade? I only have the secondary school knowledge of geography though I loved it and usually lead my mates in the subject that time. |
Re: Gis And Remote Sensing: Is There Lecturing/job Prospect? by PalmTree(m): 12:19pm On Mar 30, 2013 |
I just saw your post though I got your mail earlier on. If you add determination to all the qualities you mentioned above then you are good to go. GIS is very useful in the military, infact it was developed by the U.S military after the Cold war. Cheers |

@ Palmtree: I am so delighted reading from you once again. My passion is awakened daily for GIS/RS. My constrain, some school admint student of science background at O/l. Foreign are delighted to offer me admission but Nigerian schools seem not willing. Pls help if you have information on this. |
Re: Gis And Remote Sensing: Is There Lecturing/job Prospect? by PalmTree(m): 6:22pm On Apr 26, 2013 |
Good to read from you too. What do you mean by O/I? From which source did you get the information that some schools only admit students with science background? The only problem I see here is that you have a HND certificate which only qualifies you for a PGD in GIS. Do you have the funds to pursue the degree abroad? If yes then by all means do! Like I have posted earlier, no university in Nigeria can equip you with even half of what you will need to survive in this field because GIS is very technical and you will need hands on training and experience to keep above water. To everyone reading this thread, focus and resilience is the key to surviving in any field. If you want to pursue a career in GIS, take a customized training in GIS, database management, computer programing, desktop publishing and web design. Don't be discouraged by the cost of training, surely as you advance in the field you will be gratified. The MGIS degree you want will just add to your profile... You'll all agree with me that IT wise in Nigeria, we are quite backward, so let's bring ourselves up to speed. Finally, if integrityfood doesn't mind a PGD GIS in Unilorin, I could help you with some information. PalmTree |
Re: Gis And Remote Sensing: Is There Lecturing/job Prospect? by integrityfood: 2:47pm On May 16, 2013 |
I will not mind my brother. Again, I was thinking that I can achieve both GIS/RS in one programme. What I mean by O/L is science based courses at ordinary Level (physics, chemistry etc) |
