Why Do Businesses Fail In Nigeria? by Deleahmed: 11:40am On Nov 08, 2012
Have we all begin to ponder on the factors responsible for the failure of private businesses in Nigeria as others like Coca cola, Mercedes-Benz also started as a small business but have been in existence for ages and have continued to grow.

So the question is why is it that most small businesses in Nigeria don't go beyond the first generation?

OP this is a very valid question. From what I've seen many business in Nigeria face problems with logistics, this tends to be problematic when doing business in Nigeria. E.g. bad roads and lack of constant power supply.

There is certainly enough populace for ANY type of business to thrive.

the first creator of the wealth (father) might not reveal the secret to the son, hence the wealth dies with him.
so we dont have generational wealthy lineage.

A son need not rely on his father to reveal any 'great secret'

.1. Poor Planning... - Many people stumble upon X amount of money and quickily rush into the closest business they can see around them without planning and carrying out the proper ground work..

2. Follow-Follow : Because Peter made it selling recharge cards, is no guarantee that Paul will also make it selling the same comodity. Dont get into a business solely because another man is doing same.

3. Multiple Taxation: How can One business pay the following Levies, Duties and Taxes;
- Environmental Sanitation Levy
- Personal Income Tax
- Value Added Tax
- Union Levy
- Local Government Tax
- Signboard Levy
- NAFDAC Levy (if you are in the food and drugs/chemical business)
e.t.c

One business can be paying as much as 10 different fees to 10 different government and Union bodies..

Every successful business has inner workings. Should one not be trained or given proper advice on such, the company will fail. There are stakeholders like the suppliers and special customers that one has to build relationship with. Should the father or CEO not brief his successor on the dynamics and present situation with such stakeholders, the business will fail. There are also many other examples

I can tell that you dont have experience from your comment.

@Mad Cow!
I very much agree with you Bro.

In addition to points above, power/electricity has also been a major contributor to the death of a lot of businesses. By the time you look at the running cost of a business, you would find out that Fueling and generator maintenance is forms about 80% of your running cost.

Even the so called Manufacturing Industries lay-off their staff with excuses of cost of fueling there power plants for manufacturing.

Secondly, business owners don't run analysis of their spendings (running cost) in comparison with their income/profit and before they realise what is going on, the business would have shrunk.

Businesses in Nigeria fail for the following reasons

1. High Cost of Operations - This is one of the biggest killers of Nigerian Businesses. It just makes our products uncompetitive when it comes to pricing. It is always cheaper to import and resell. Cost of labour is not very expensive but infrastructure like Nepa, providing Security and even bribes makes it difficult.

2. Policy Changes - Our government has not been consistent with Policy formulation. Regime after regime, policies just change overnight and put businesses in danger. Sanusi alone in 3 years has implemented 25 far reaching policy changes, so businesses cannot operate effectively in such climates

3. Corruption - Businesses die to the fact that they have to bribe. Unfortunately some people with integrity cannot do such things so their businesses may die and sometimes the cost of bribery reduces potential profits to nothing.

4. Security - Lack of adequate security to protect infrastructure and equipments.

5. Management - We have very few great managers in Nigeria. We all plan for the short term, try to make quick and easy money today while disregarding the long term. So lack of skilled management is a problem. So several businesses start well but end badly due to mismanagement

6. Succession Planning - One the owner retires, no one is able to take over from him and run the company with the same vigour and vision. The person that takes over may just wanna get rich quick.

7. Values System - We generally have poor maintenance systems. We lack foresight and cant plan for the future. Greed is also a major problem with our society!

Re: Why Do Businesses Fail In Nigeria? by Philolos: 3:57pm On Nov 19, 2012
Businesses fail in Nigeria for most of the same reasons that businesses fail everywhere else. In Nigeria, to add salt to pepper, businesses fail because of uncertainties (inflation, legal infrastructure, government regulations or lack of, etc) in the systems, the lack of institutions that support businesses, the lack of trust, professionalism, etc. There are so many small businesses (stores, market traders, etc) that do succeed as businesses in Nigeria. However, the environment does not support businesses becoming world-class (private or publically owned).

i agree with you on this, in addition, the basic infrastructure that will allow a business thrive or survive is not in place. light, accessible roads to mention a few.

i can also say the business owner's greed causes business to collapse, when he sees money he wants to grab every and not plan ahead. He/She should also place himself on a salary scale and as the business grow the salary grows

I rest my case

Businesses making it in Nigeria with the present Govt policies is like sqeezing water out of stones. Only God or wuruwuru can help. Choose one to succeed. We can only have local champions with integrity but not well built international standard company raised from the ground tho I know a few exceptions and I intend my own businesses oo join these few soon. We are heading for our 5th year anniversary now, which is the half life of most Nigerian biznesses.
Re: Why Do Businesses Fail In Nigeria? by mrrock: 4:38pm On Nov 19, 2012
Your question is not very clear. But as far as I understand it the No.1 reason small businesses fail in Nigeria is poor electricity supply. Every business have one thing or the other to do with electricity.
Second reason is Nigeria banks don't give loan facilities to small startups. So, even if you have a good idea your business may not succeed because Nigeria banks can only deal with established businesses..... inshort (the rich).
Why businesses don't grow to the likes of coca-cola is another question. Coca-cola is not a small business.

There are two types of failures that i can think of now,
1. The business failing right in the hands of the promoters or proprietors...this can be linked to all the points that you guys have enumerated above.
2. My major concern is the failure of businesses after the demise of their owners. Businesses in advanced countries are handed down to boards and trustees even before the death of the owners, and decisions are taken most times with the profit of the business at heart, but in Nigeria, you see that family members and children of the owners ruin the company. Many times, rancor between the family ruin the progress of the businesses because the owner will have to divide his properties among many people. And if he/she fails to leave a will the yam pepper will even be more scattered.

good

Add

8. Arrogance of the owner when the business is successful.

9. Reducing the quality in Products based business, eg. Iphone improving every year, but in nigeria the price will be increasing while the quality will be reduced to make more profit. Eventually when people are tired or have alternative they dump the product.

A cursory look at the posts above didn't show anybody talk about one of the most important factors - adequate funding!

It matters very little if you have the foresight of Steve Jobs; if you start a business that runs out of money before it reaches sustainability, it will eventually fail.

For example, if you start a manufacturing business that will require you to produce 1000 parts based on your overhead to make a profit and you only produce 999 parts, you will end up failing. There’s a minimum amount needed to sustain any business and any amount over that is profit.

Do you know exactly how much is needed to sustain your business? Not knowing the number is another reason a great number of businesses fail.

Many nigerian businesses fail becos the owners have no passion or vision for the business. They also lack professionalism in their dealings. Just interested in making profit.
