What's with nigerians refering to single as well as multiple photographs as "PIX"

I thought pix was short for pictrures (plural) and picture for one single photo?

What's with this new trend? Am I the only one who finds it extremely irritating?

I think if u say 'pix' it is pluralised and 'pic' singular , i guess.....
