errr, ping 0ms. impressive. Are you sitting on a backbone or major hub or in a datacentre, cuz that would be cheating . Also, burst speeds would not be so useful, what is your constant download / upload rate? That Iphone looks a tad photo-shopped to me....I can get 5MBps up and down on a dedicated provider with ping of 50ms, yes very fast internet is good but believe me if a typical Nigerian could get a constant 100KBPs up and down, the world would be such a better place for us at this point, never mind all the 3.75G network crap all of them are spewing... |

"fast internet" in Nigeria is a huge joke. I remember. When I first got to the UK, I downloaded a 350mb file in 2 minutes, took me a while to get used to the internet speed, its things like these that make me not wanna go back to Naija. |

Having talked about internet speed and bandwidth here on Nairaland for a long while now, I can confidently say that Nigeria is a mix of so many parodies. I can confidently say that Nigeria has the speed & data capacity to match any country in the world including Korea & Japan. Now before blowing your lid's off, you have to consider the context in which I am speaking off. Nigeria has 5 major fiber optic submarine cables carrying internet traffic to the outside world. 1 Main One Cable 2 WACS 3 Glo One 4 SAT3 5 ACE These submarine cables bring a large amount of bandwidth to the shores of Lagos. Therefore, users in Lagos have a distinct advantage in tapping this great ocean of bandwidth. This is what I mean when comparing Nigeria to the world. Now our major challenge is getting this large horde of bandwidth to the hinterland of Nigeria & having access to it from all nooks & crannies of the country. From Maiduguri to Port Hacourt, from Sokoto to Warri, from Bayelsa to Kano etc. To do that, we need ultra fast super highways. A fibre optic backbone connection. Just as we have National Dual-Carriage highways connecting major regions of the country. Here now lies the first problem. All the 4 major operators are now each individually building their own networks and charging exorbitant interconnect charges. This takes a large amount of capital & equipment. Now after bring this bandwidth to some major cities, there's no fixed infrastructure to use to deliver fast speeds to the homes of users. Mobile Broadband speeds are theoretically good enough but when used in contention with voice traffic & other network issues, we start having issues again. The frequent incidences of fiber cuts on those backbone connections aren't also helping matters. But with all these challenges, the network operators are still making money & declaring huge profits. Nigeria doesn't have much a problem of speed per se but an issue of bandwidth limitation by network operators. Yes, there is no consistency in terms of speeds across several locations but on the average when a user gets a good 3.75G connection, you can be downloading at over 1MB/s on Internet Download Manager. Will post some screenshots later. And like I earlier said, Mobile Broadband accounts for over 80% of internet browsing in nigeria today. Dial Up is dead. ADSL is offered only in very small areas. VSAT is also still used but dying out slowly. So, our brothers in Ghana browsing on ADSL with Vodafone will of course have a faster connection than someone browsing on his 3.1Mbps modem in Lagos on a crowded cell tower BTS. |
