Okija_juju: NEW THREAD: THINGS A NIGERIAN SHOULD CONSIDER WHEN HOUSE HUNTING

1. The size of the House How big are the rooms, et. al.

2. Water Supply Does the house/compound have an independent borehole or is it dependent on public water supply. What is the size of the storage tank. How far away is the nearest stream incase there is no water?. Is there a well in the compound?! Does the next door neighbour sell water?! How much do the 'Water Supply Abokis' charge per litre of water?!e.t.c

3. Your Landlord (especially for thosel iving in a 'face-me-I-face-you' aparment Is he troublesome?! Does he live in the same compound with you?! Is he the type to increase your rent when he see that you have just bought a new car or a new flat screen TV?! Does he come up with abitrary fees and levies like 'Burial Levy' for his dead grandmothers funeral, 'Sanitation Levy' 'Electricity Levy' 'Generator Noise Levy', e.t.c..

4. Shared Facilities: E.g Toilet, Bathroom and Generator.. If you have to share Toilet& bathroom, how many people use these facilities, the neatness of these facilities, e.t.c.. For Generators, whats the service plan like, how much does it cost, how much it costs to run the generator, is their an exist clause in the agreement for you incase you become dissatisfied, e.t.c

5. Parking Space: Is there enough space for everyone to park comfortably..

6. NEPA: How steady is electricity in the area?! Is the house using prepaid meters or Post Paid.. E.t.c

7. Security: How is the robbery situation like in the area?! Is there a vigilante group operating in the area?! Whats the closest police station in the area?! What is the phone number of the DPO of that station?!

8. CHURCH: How far away is your room window from the loud speakers of the nearest church?!

9. Access Road: Is your street tarred or would you have to park on the road and walk home every night, especially when it rains!?

10. Your Neighbours.. How much of an a`sshole are they?!

11. Phone signal; Where inside the compound you canget GSM signal and where you can get EDGE signal and where you can find 3G signal..

12. Transportation: How much it costs to enter transport from your house to the office.. How is the traffic situation like in that area?!

Please add more o!! These are the best I could think of for now..

BRO I FEEL YOU.....you are really vomitting this from experience wink

glimpse: :-Xi forgot to write this...if you'd be renting a 'self contain', ensure that it wasn't built on the 'septic tank'. So as to avoid that akward moment when the 'septic tank' needs to be emptied, and then the landlord knocks on your door and he tells you to remove your rug. shocked. Mehn! Some Ikwerre landlords are amazing. No need to waste that space that could fetch them more money.

ugly Betty: After considering all these things, what about the size of the kitchen. for us women, it is necessary especially if you are going to stay in a flat or so.

That was the first place my wife was always checking when we were checking houses to rent.

More factors to Not buy a house in a certain neighborhood.

1. any graffiti in the area?
2. Presence of police patrol cars
3. Any igbos around?

If yes, then robbery is the order of the day in that area. Don't waste your money on buying a property in that area.
