The sting of President Obama’s re-election has driven some of most disillusioned to the White House’s We the People petition forum with a steep demand: That their state be allowed to secede from the union. And the minimovement is now going national.
Disgruntled voters in 34 states have filed the petitions, mainly in states Obama lost but also in several he won, including Florida and Nevada.
But it’s the petition from Texas that has garnered the most attention: With 60,000 names attached, it’s well past the 25,000-signature threshold that usually warrants an official response from the Obama administration. Texas Gov. Rick Perry has weighed in, saying he doesn’t support the petition, even though he erroneously suggested in 2009 that Texas can leave the union if it chooses.
Not to be outdone, Obama supporters filed a counter petition with We the People, calling for secession supporters to be exiled from the United States.
It could be recalled that the US gained independence in 1776, and has been practicing democracy for hundreds of years now. Alas! Disgruntled because their candidate didnt win, they want secession. Ours may not be as modernized as theirs, but the call for secession has revealed their deficiencies, and those who always make reference to the US. Our democracy is less than 15years, yet our unity has been reinforced even in the midst of trouble. Development can only be attained when units pull their resources together for a common purpose. America is what it is today not because there was secession, they are giant because of the formidable bond. Imagine the strength of USA if the call for secession finally pulls through. Ofcourse smaller nations will overtake them.
Nigeria is on the part of progress. It may be slow but we shall get there. Secession isn't an option. Traditional African culture is hinged on communism. It emphasizes unity and corporate existence. Fighting and bombing for meaningless and factional ideologies won't help us. All this country needs is commitment to the ideals of the nation. Govt may not be perfect, but they can only do better when we support them, advice them, and say no in a democratic manner when necessary. They predicted that Nigeria will be no more come2015, now they are the ones on the verge of collapse. They have failed. This time, they will look up to us for solutions, knowing that what binds us is more than what wants to disunite us.
