Lol. It's funny how this man talks. North sustained Nigeria before the discovery of oil! A region that was struggling to sustain itself! Let somebody tell him that 'long gone are the days of ignorance'. Any way, what do you expect from someone struggling to sustain/retain his crumbling unworthy lofty position? Lol.

dounleedee: Even though Oil was discovered pre independence, the regions generated their respective incomes from their natural resources, kept 50% of their turnovers and contributed 50% to the centre.
After the civil war, Gowon abrogated the sharing formula and rather than a blanket contribution of resources to the centre, oil became Nigeria’s major means of income and 100% of the revenue was decreed to be paid to the centre to be shared based on the principle of derivation. Funny enough, our history clearly shows that Northern Nigeria has been drawing more funds from the national wealth based on fake population censors and glorified lopsided uneconomic local governments created.

Two questions Mr Abdullahi should answer are;

(a) Which part of Southern Nigeria apart from Lagos as Federal Capital was developed using the 50% contributed by all the regions to the centre?

(b) How much does Northern Nigeria currently contributes to the centre and on what resources, minerals and produce?

If he can’t answer these questions, then he should adopt the posture of a mule.

I quite agreed with some of your assertions but to the bolded, apart from the Lagos that contribute 65% of non-oil GDP and the South South region, with the exception of the North, what exactly does the remaining region contributes to the center?

Southwest does not start and end with Lagos, Lagos alone contributes a greater percentage of the 80%, what's the contribution of other Southwest States and is the situation really different from that of the north in terms of their contribution toward the center?

Maxymilliano:
Sir, how do you think the north will resolve its economic problem if the onshore/offshore doesn’t work out?

Even if the onshore/offshore works out, it is not going to be enough to solve the economic crisis of the north. Before this oil came into existence, the north had been successfully taking care of the economic activities of this country with farming. Farming has been in Nigeria before independence and 15 years later. If we had continued with that trade in the north, I believe we would not have cared if there was petroleum or not; it wouldn’t have bothered us one bit.

Please, how old is this Ango Abdullahi He may be suffering from senility or something similar.
How can he open his mouth and say that the north was "successfully taking care of the economic activities of this country with farming" as if there are no revenue records.
The fact is that each region had its marketing boards collecting its agro-allied revenue and sending a pre-determined percentage to the federal government for its functions BEFORE Nzeogwu's 1st coup of Jan. 1966 and Aguiyi-Ironsi's unitary government.

BTW, what is Ango Abdullahi and his nomadic brothers, who arrived only a few centuries ago in Nigeria, waiting for to continue with the agric trade so they won't care for Niger Delta's oil wealth anymore
I repeat, what are they waiting for

And I thought their leader. Uthman dan Fodio's slogan was:

Conscience, nurtured by Truth

which is also The Guardian newspaper's motto.

Absolutely nothing and that precisely is why the likes of Mr Abdullahi from any parts of Nigeria should remain mute if they cannot steer discussions toward wealth creation for the country outside oil.

all4naija: Oil was discovered in Nigeria 1956 at Oloibiri in the Niger Delta. It's discovered 2 years after the name Nigeria existed. So, the North has be sustaining the Brits ruling not Nigeria as a nation.

This man where did you get your history from? Nigeria we all know was formed in 1914 after the amalgamation. Guess no history teachers in school these days.

Dis man is jus making statement out of sentiment. He shld be strip of dat professorship. He shld knw dat we are in computer age nw where info is at d tip of our finger.
Even though North was rich b4 in agric(cotton and ground nut), dey never sustain d country cos every region was takin care of its self. During pre civil war, each region develop on its own and pay tax to d central government b4 Gowon abrogate it. While d north produce g/nut and cotton, SW has cassava, cocoa and others, East has palm oil, timber and others.
Its after d discovery of d oil dat every region nw abandon their agric products cos of d easy money frm oil. And d north has rule dis country for almost 40 years, bt didnt care to develop d country or north bt only knw abt their pocket, family and cronies.
Abeg let go bac to regionlism jor, its d best. It bring d best out of every region.

Amalgamation of the Northern and Southern protectorates was still under the British ruler-ship. The Nigeria started becoming autonomous by 1954 it continued to experience a form of nationalism (that was when Nigeria become a nation for the people started to exist). You are on about amalgamation under Lord Lugard under the British ruler-ship while I am on about recognizing Nigeria as a nation with autonomy(under the people)!

Wiki source: 'On 1 October 1954, the colony became the autonomous Federation of Nigeria.'

You can correct me if I am wrong

Thank you!

Prof. has senile dementia. He is one of those causing confusion in the North. He had the opportunity but refused to educate his people. The North had always depended on the South for survival. Nigeria is undeveloped largely because of the backwardness of the North. Prof. is an agriculturist but I'm not aware of the agricultural programmes he has designed to empower his people. He is only interested in politics and political appointments despite the fact that he is aged. He is no longer relevant in Nigerian politics.

I am just wondering the amount of damage that this fellow has caused this nation with this level of falsehood teaching young formative minds. This lie has been so repeated often that he now believes it to be true. These guys are shameless as far as falsehood is concerned. From false population figures to blatant lies about common history. To think that this is a so called leader from the north deliberately leading his listeners on a path of falsehood knowing same to be false just amazes me. What a shameless lier!

let me say something about every tribe i come from originally the Yoruba tribe even though born and raised in a different country(UK)the yorubas are the most transparent Nigerians who open arms to all and never discriminate igbos are the most visionary leaders and they know what there doing they have not been strong development since they igbos was in power. the northerners are the reason why Nigeria has the most happiest people in the world they struggle everyday to get a living and never depend on there government so i don't blame there being a boko horam but only if they were not killing innocent people.

It is issues like this that keep nigeria in the doldrum of non development. The north had the yam and the knife for majority of the country's existence and today they have nothing to show for it. If anyone thinks things are changing by mere change of power to the south, then we better wake up and face reality. In fact by the time the south rules for as long as the north did, with all the oil wealth and waste presently going on in the country, the country will end up far poorer than we were before the amalgamation. The Niger delta's resources and oil wealth is not benefiting the ordinary man from that region, poverty is on the rise, militancy and cultism is the order of the day, no meaning plan or evidence of development or the present or the future. Instead of lamenting or accusing the other side of denying it what got has given it or denied it of its entitlement is as the case may be, we should take a cue from the oil producing states in the middle east who are saving today for any eventuality that might arise in the absence of this petrol dollar curse. It's high time the youths of this country get their heads out of the oily cloud and see how they can make the country better with or without the OOOOO....IIII..LLLL!!!

Re: North Sustained Nigeria Economically Before Oil Was Discovered - Ango Abdullahi by bizgen: 12:03am On Nov 20, 2012
have we bothered to ask ourselves why these false comments from northern leaders. They have come to find out they failed themselves, their people and their region when they had power.they never believed it will get to a time the power equation will change the way it is now. They are losers. If they sustained nigeria with whatever before the discovering of oil.what stops them from using that same means to bring the much needed development their people are craving for now and stop complaining about derivation/offshore/onshore tinz.
