lepasharon: Not having clinical symptoms doesn't portend that all is well The fact that some amino chains are misplaced means there must be repercussions. There might be impairment in the way that the blood carries oxygen and nutrients around the body. And also the possibility of quick breakdown and degeneration of the blood cells than a normal AA Hence there must be precautions and advises that would make things better 1 Like |

blueskies:partially right the S haemoglobin trait is a natural adaptation of the body to malaria attacks. The reason S trait is more prevalent here in the malaria endemic sub Saharan Africa. blood cells with the S hemoglobin chain gets destroyed early by the spleen hereby destroying any malaria parasites in the red blood cells before they complete their life cycle ( malaria parasites develop in d red blood cells) so someone with genotype AS will have some level of immunity against malaria compared to genotype AA. but note that there are other factors responsible for malaria attacks. Genotype is not enough to confer full immunity to malaria ( although it can confer some level of immunity) |

I believe its high time we began to also raise the awareness for beta thalassemia.( one of the other numerous thalassemia disease mentioned earlier by fsb) although its not as prevalent as sickle cell disease it is also caused by two carriers ignorantly marrying each other its not only genotype that guarantees not giving birth to a sickler it's very possible for AA couples to give birth to a sickler. it has happened a lot of times here in Nigeria. |

Abiagirl777: Not necessarily true but rather, there's a 1in 4 chance or 25% chance of getting a sickler (Hb SS) in every conception. So it is still possible to have all the kids as sicklers, it is also possible to have kids with normal HbAA. 2 Likes |

Good day doctors in the house, Pls I need clarification on this. Is it possible for a childs genotype and blood group not to match with d father. The fathers genotype is AA and blood group O+ while that of d child is B+ and genotype AC 1 Like |

Emmahunk: In fact, AS + AS means the witches from your respective villages, have started manipulating your destiny. You can still backtrack from a proposed union, or make sure you have millions to conduct pre-implantation genetic diagnosis for sickle-cell anemia on any pregnancy, that occurs. You also need to keep millions on hand, to facilitate a successful IVF using ICSI or any other procedure, to achieve a successful pregnancy, that results in an embryo free of the SS gene. AS +SS or SS+SS means those witches in the village, have already concluded your case. No appeal.... |

AC is normal but susceptible, SC has mild anemia and CC is normal and resistant to malaria. The following approximate fitnesses have been assigned to these genotypes... If you want to know more about genotype AC, please visit the page for answer: genotyping by sequencing. |

The knowledge of hemoglobin genotype is relevant when choosing a life partner to avoid compatibility issues that may result in devastating effects relating to conception. This is why it is essential to ask questions such as how many types of genotype are there and what is their compatibility. People with sickle cells experience episodes of severe pains in body parts where oxygen flow is compromised because of blockage in the blood vessels. People with genotype AA are safe to marry individuals with any of the others. AS is compatible with AA, AS, and AS, AS and AC are too risky since two sickle cells should avoid conception. Below is a comprehensive compatibility chart: AA + AA = AA, AA, AA, AA (Excellent) AA + AS = AA, AS, AA, AS, (Good) AA + SS = AS, AS, AS, AS, (Fair) AA + AC = AA, AA, AA, AC. (Good) AS + AS = AA, AS, AS, SS, (Very Bad) AS + SS = AS, SS, SS, SS, (Very Bad) AS + AC = AA, AC, AS,SS. (Bad; Advice needed) SS + SS = SS, SS, SS, SS, (Very Bad) AC + SS = AS, AS, SS, SS, (Very Bad) AC + AC = AA, AC, AC, SS. ( Bad; Advice needed) Difference between genotype and phenotype Even though the two might sound the same and are related, they mean different things. While genotype refers to the set of genes in the DNA of an organism responsible for a particular trait, on the other hand, phenotype,is described as the physical expression, or characteristics of that trait. Phenotypes can be determined just by observing things such as height, hair color, and eye color, and so on. |
