Crime 1: Never fail to consult Wordpress Codex ever,
first you need to create a menu with a code

wp_nav_menu( array( 'theme_location' => 'top', 'menu_class' => 'menu-top-right social clearfix', 'container'    => '', ) );

and in the backend it will create a Menu there for you to populate so where you want menus, just use that code and for God sake pls use Wordpress Codex those guys suffered to document it so its only fair you use it. it'll solve 90% of yours problems and use a very good IDE that can generate PHPDoc eclipse with Zend PDT can. take care

In the Codex you can add more options, and if you are feeling incredibly brave you can use the "Walker_Nav_Menu" you extend the class process each menu item and add classes or effect them, that's meant for advance usage though.
