Winnergal, TV indeed makes people dumb. It may be thought to educate in conception but in reality, it actually entertains. Watching too much tv stiffle creativity and handicap reasoning faculty. Yet, I conceed that you can learn from tv. However, you may be surprised to find that much of what you learn are gabbages that are hard to disposed of. Take a time to watch any of those channels with open mind, and you would find that their programmes offer so much rubbish. Except news, that is information, I don't see any positive impact of tv. It would be of interest to note that, tv today had become commercial ventures. Therefore producer try to outwit one another by introducing hypnotic programmes that makes viewers stay glue to the station. The negative effect of this is that, you find out that you are addicted for no apparent reasons. This takes your quality time and blurs your creativity. This observation become dangerous when we consider the fact that it effect last longer than the duration spent in front of tv. I think in my opinion, tv, when watched for too long outlive their usefulness and make people dumb. |

Not only will it dumb you down - but it doesn't tell the truth about the world. T.V. is geared towards perserving the elite. It will RARELY tell truths and then only half-truths. |

@Topic If all you watch is "Super Story" and "American Idol", "Big Brother Nigeria"--or pornography 24/7, then you are really going to be the dumber than the dumbest. If you watch educational programmes on Discovery, Travel, History, National Geog, News, Health and Science channels--I bet you will not come and start this kind of a thread. Most retro-developing countries do not have these so the only predictable outcome is "dumbness". If you do not have electricity, what can you watch but darkness turn to light and vice versa? If you do not have a country that invests in an educative "media"--what do you expect?---Dumbness. More viable brain cells only have death awaiting them. You are a product of your environment. Dumbness! I see he he he he he he.   Choose programmes that will take your mind around the world without ever living your living room.  The best and most affordable education one can ever give to himself or herself.Same thing with radio. No difference. If you stimulate you brain with knowledge worthy subjects, you can only benefit from those--unless you are cognitively challenged!  |

It depends on the kind of programmes and channels you watch that determines dumbness and how much time you spend infront of the TV. Channels like MTV have really got nothing to offer to the intellect. |

Almondjoy, stillwater, you guys are right. But if you look at the TV channels today you would noticed that they keep smuggling useless adverts and programme into the midst of education programmes. And most of the education programmes on Nigerian airwaves are actually entertainment programmes on the outlook. Check them out. |

what truly scares me about TV is the way it can impart the most ridiculous values - the pursuit of the material - you can only be happy if you keep on accumulating the latest consumer goods( incidentally on credit. . .)and those rap videos, which had us all doing the sagging pants, hos and biatches thing back in the day. . . no offense intended (o the ladies)- the nature of tv has always been a subject of debate between me and the women in my life( madam, my sis, my mum) i have always stated that there is nothing like tv to derail you from your objectives - and 90% of the time with no true gain! i used to resent the hell out of my dada as a kid for all the tv restrictins he imposed. but watching an old episode of fresh prince the other day - i was thinking - what is this crap? and the same applies to 90% of the contemporary programs out there. 10 years from now, they will be crap, and you just might regret not spending the time used in watching them on more productive things.thank God for pirated DVD collections. |

like others said, it all depends on what u watch and how long u watch tv, channels like discovery and national geographic are very educative and take u well ahead of ur peers, make u sharp instead, but if u're talking about silver bird and the likes that spend 6hrs out of 24 showing music africa, then i will understand the level of dumbness. |

Let me clarify what DEAF BLIND AND DUMB viewers mean. They watch films like papa Ajasco, the only they see is mama Ajasco bumbum and papa Ajasco and Pa james baldness; they only thing they hear are those word that incited laughter. And the only thing they talk about are the useless comedy from the film. Maybe a sentence or two. That is actually funny. They would NEVER see, hear, or talk about the glaring moral the film is projecting. Ask any DBD (Deaf, Blind and Dumb) viewer what he saw after a major TV programme and you will sorry for the producers. Let me give you an example from personal experience. Whenever Abacha deliver a national broadcast the only thing I remember is a LARGE GOOGLE and a dark man sitting behind it. When I watch "INSIDE OUT" with Agatha, I sees people arguing for the sake of argument. That is examples of DBD viewers. For adult, it is manageable. For children, it is a serious disease that can only be cured by taking the tv away from home. Unfortunately, when ht come to TV, some adult are in fact children with chronic infection. |

Seriously, I don't know of any. I stopped watching tv long ago. I mean Nigerian tv except for news. That is why tv is permanently on Channels Tv. And CNN. A lady came visiting me on new year and was surprised at my choice of channels. I don't choose for my guests. But once they are out, I switch it back to news channels or science programme. Talking of educationally tv on Nigerian TV, I know none o. Maybe KALI and TAWA would do. Seriously, Papa Ajasco and Super Story is what I heard from people. No single science programme. I think there is nothing worth mentioning. But if you ask me to mention entertainment, ha, we get them abundantly. Sound city, Nigerzie, Music Africa, that one run for about six hours daily and nightly. Too numerous to mention. People don't watch them anyway. Home video, internet, and mp3 is taking over. God helps the up and coming youths. |

olanajim: No wonder Nigeria is the way it is. When I visited recently, I could not consistently watch any of the programmes because of poor audio/visuals. African Magic was monotonous and even the politcal commentaries were trite. Like you said, I had to stick to DVDs I brought with me or listen to music. I can imagine what kinds of things the children are watching then. Nigeria is truly a great nation. Breeding ground for the intellectually unmotivated. A shame. |

Am a TV nut. . .no apologies!! Love it!! Basically watch all sorts of things. . .it's just upto one to have enough common sense to weed out trash from junk and maybe find something worth learning. Something that may inspire. . .like those discovery channel shows. As for radio. . .i don't listen alot to that just sometimes the news but mostly just music. |
