I am EXTREMELY EXTREMELY APPALLED at the shallow depth of knowledge MOST christians have of their bibles. In this day and age, this is a disgrace, bordering on stone-age ignorance. Most christians carry a bible (or two) on their person, walk into a church building or home devotion and only read those parts to which they are directed by the preacher or leader of the sermon ( or bible study group). Very rarely do they take a hollistic approach to the narratives of the text. This is PATHETIC. Even fewer still are interested in the socio-cultural environment in which the bible was set and written. Few still have heard of the statesmen, historian, philosophers, and writers contemporaneous with Jesus (if he existed). So, how do they know they are NOT being FOOLED by the preachers? What is this world coming to, with this level of ignorance? ============================================================================== Some of my other threads The Dangers Of Religious Fundamentalism To Intellectualism https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=110955.msg1929006#msg1929006 Only For Those Who Know Their Bibles And Some History: Who Was Jesus? https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112697.msg1954632#msg1954632 Only For Those Who Know Their Bibles: Old Testament Stories https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112679.msg1954426#msg1954426 Human Sacrifice In The Bible: Lev 27: 29 & Judges 11 https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112584.msg1953340#msg1953340 Please, Please, Please: Christians - Read Read Read Your Bibles https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112578.msg1953311#msg1953311 When Was Jesus Crucified? https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112557.msg1952665#msg1952665 On Conversion To A Religion (christianity Or I-slam) https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112547.msg1952353#msg1952353 Faith-healers And Tele-evangelists https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112398.msg1950528#msg1950528 Where Did Sin Originate? https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112377.msg1950291#msg1950291 For The Non-beleivers Only, 1 https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112262.msg1948957#msg1948957 Would Christains Be Criminals And Offenders If They Were Not Christians? https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112259.msg1948919#msg1948919 On The Authenticity Of The New Testament, Part 1 https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112240.msg1948631#msg1948631 Has Atheism Got Principle? Have you finished ? It's a matter of choice therationa. You have chosen a path and it's hard for you to comprehend why we still believe. In Acts of the apostles we read how Peter stood up to preach to a multitude of people. This was a man with no iota of boldness, who denied Jesus thrice. Don't you think Peter must have witnessed something? He and the apostles were persecuted for what they believed in. Jesus actually told them they were going to be persecuted. Who in his or her right mind would like to be persecuted if they hadn't witnessed something? I'm sorry but you will continue to be appalled because it greater than your logic and reasoning. This is just the beginning of your disgust. God bless. |

@ stillwater, talking to therationa is akin to pouring water on a rock. |

Hope you guys are reading your bibles studiously this time. Because I am looking for a well informed discussion rather than quote-mining only those passage that suit your case. |

therationa: We too are looking for "well informed discussion" rather than irrelevant quotes from your fellow athiests, 29 threads in less than 3weeks and a dishonest approach to issues. you can't pretend to be looking for "well informed discussion" when you havent even read the bible yourself. A very good examples is your thread on human sacrifice. You quote verse 29 of Lev 27 as proof that the bible commands human sacrifice however verse 29 is wholly dependent on your understanding of verse 28! |

4Him: Am sorry; you are wrong yet again. The relevant sections were: Lev 27: 29 and Judges 11 What do you mean by verse 11? Of which book/chapter/verse? |

@4Him: Omo boy, kilon sele? Two apologies in a row to an atheist? Thats unacceptable. I don't wanna read about the third please. Make me happy: I will support you against an atheist anytime. However, you need to defend the Bible, otherwise jusmp to my camp. We are waiting to receive you. @Stillwater: Defend your Book, instead of simple capitulation. @Nwando: The Lucifer label is not good enough here. Maybe in other situation/setting. Please argue your point against Therationa. I think he will kill the Psych people with though provoking ideas: Nigeria can't take a person like him. We will transfer him to your part of 'God's own country.' I think his immigration status will floor the Scotland yard guys (M15 and M16). And no costable will dare to come close. He will have the support of the Anglican bishop. lol. |
