Spills happen all the time. Don’t panic, but do act quickly! The damage can worsen if the spill spreads. For the purposes of this article we are assuming the liquid was spilled in to the keyboard. Please only follow these instructions if that is the case. We believe the best way to minimize the damage is remove all power (the power adapter and battery — if possible). Once the power adapter and battery are disconnected hold down the power button for 30 seconds to discharge any remaining charge in the system’s capacitors. Finally, put a towel down, open up the system and carefully place it face down on the towel so that the water can seep out of the keyboard for a week or two. Make sure the system is in a cool and dry place. Excess humidity will slow down, if not prevent the system from drying out properly. If the spill was a liquid that also had sugar (i.e. juice and beer) or was acidic (i.e. coffee and tea), then at the very least it is likely the keyboard will need to be replaced because of corrosion and other damage. Do not use a hair dryer because it can potentially spread the damage. After the system has dried out, try plugging in just the power adapter and hitting the power button. If the laptop powers on and works normally, you have achieved some level of success! Back up your data just in case, the recovery is temporary, though. |
