http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-01-18/the-north-dakota-crude-oil-that-s-worth-less-than-nothing Oil is so plentiful and cheap in the U.S. that at least one buyer says it would need to be paid to take a certain type of low-quality crude. Flint Hills Resources LLC, the refining arm of billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch’s industrial empire, said it would pay -$0.50 a barrel Friday for North Dakota Sour, a high-sulfur grade of crude, according to a list price posted on its website. That’s down from $13.50 a barrel a year ago and $47.60 in January 2014. 1 Like |

6 Bad Investment Habits That Are Draining Your Portfolio Making smart investment choices is the first step towards building a diversified, balanced portfolio, but investors can undermine their own wealth-building efforts without even realizing it. There are certain patterns that are all too easy to fall into that can be highly detrimental to your returns in the long run. Breaking the cycle begins with knowing which bad habits are most likely to sabotage your investment strategy. 1. Focusing on Short-Term Performance Investing is a long game and when the goal is building wealth, the number one trait investors need to have is patience. Unfortunately, many investors tend to zero in on a stock or mutual fund's most recent performance rather than looking at its historical track record to determine whether it's a smart bet. The result is that instead of taking the buy and hold approach, which is favored by top investors like Warren Buffett, they find themselves jumping from one security to another in search of the next big thing. In the meantime, they can end up missing out on some decent returns in their quest to find the "perfect" investment. 2. Being a Follower Birds of a feather tend to flock together, and that's especially evident during times of market upheaval. When stocks begin to slide, this sends investors into a collective panic, and the result is that they end up selling off assets without considering the impact on their portfolio. Following that herd instinct is something that savvy investors don't do because they understand that the market goes through ups and downs. Resisting the urge to let what others are doing drive decision-making is difficult, but it's the key to a sound bottom line. 3. Using an Inappropriate Benchmark Benchmarking is a popular way to gauge how a particular asset is performing in comparison to a broader measure of the market. For example, the Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) is a popular stock index that many investors use as their benchmark. While this tactic is useful for judging the quality of an investment, it can be problematic when the wrong benchmark is being used. When investors choose a benchmark that doesn't reflect the diversification or risk profile of their portfolio, they're going to end up with a skewed comparison that will likely have little value for shaping investment decisions. 4. Playing Favorites One of the cornerstones of investing is to diversify your holdings. That way, if a stock or mutual fund in your portfolio takes a sudden dip in value, your other assets can help to balance out the loss. A common problem many investors run into is devoting too much money to a particular investment because there's an emotional attachment involved. For example, investing heavily in an employer's stock out of a sense of loyalty can backfire if the company goes under. 5. Overlooking Fees Fees are a necessary part of investing, but that doesn't mean investors should be paying more than necessary. Skimming over a mutual fund prospectus without checking the expense ratio or trading stocks through a brokerage without adding up the cost of commissions are two of the fastest ways to shrink your investment returns. 6. Failing to Rebalance Investing isn't a set-it-and-forget-it proposition. From time to time, it's necessary for investors to rebalance to ensure that they have the right mix of assets. Maintaining the same group of stocks, bonds or funds from one year to the next without checking their performance can be a roadblock to achieving the desired level of growth. The Bottom Line Eliminating bad investment habits may take time and patience, but it's well worth the effort required. There's nothing to be gained by repeating the same negative patterns, aside from frustration and disappointment. To get the right results, investors must be willing to change up their approach to ensure that they don't fall back on these kinds of asset-shrinking behaviors.
