It is no news that kidnapping is fast becoming a source of income for those Nigerians who have proven themselves to be enemies of the people.

Before hand, kidnapping was only associated with the Niger Delta Militants who use the guise of fighting for their destroyed land to kidnap oil expatriates and as usual, demand for ransom from multinational oil firms.

The police reported that from 2008 to 2010 there was at least 887 cases of kidnapping, one can assume that the majority of people kidnapped are not members of the political elite.

But recent turn of events have shown that many kidnappers have now decided to move up the ladder, why demand for meager sum of cash when you can demand for millions from rogues, taken advantage of the security chasm which has become a norm in the Nigerian Polity. Kidnappers, with their recent activities, have now also become as greedy as the political elites, the kidnapping of the Mother of the minister of finance Professor Kamene Okonjo is proof of this, where the kidnappers first demanded for the staggering sum of N1billion, which was later reduced to N200 million.

Some hours after the kidnapping of Professor Kamene Okonjo, the wife of Rtd General Oluwole Rotimi, former governor of erstwhile western region was kidnapped, the kidnappers demanded for N200million as ransom.

Some days ago, a nollywood actress who is also the special assistant on public affairs to the Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, Miss Nkeiru Sylvanus was kidnapped, the kidnappers demanded for N100million.

With the current trend of kidnapping which have gripped the nation, one can aptly say that kidnapping has now turn to a lucrative source of income, perhaps as lucrative as graft! Owing to the gross incompetence, inefficiency, ineffectiveness, dormancy, and lackadaisical attitude often displayed by our security agencies and the government, one can almost say, The victims families pay the ransom money, however way they tend to make us think that they didn't. Ergo, "kidnapping, as a means of livelihood is here to stay", just like graft!.

One can only hope that the government do everything in their power to stop this scourge, if caution is not utilize adequately, kidnappers will soon become as bold as Boko Haram, and then maybe they might actually kidnap GEJ or a serving member of the FEC or even a member of his family, because we know for a fact that the political elites only act on matters which concern and affects them in toto, be it positive or negative.
