Should Prisoners Be Allowed To Vote? by Roland17(m): 6:15pm On Dec 18, 2012
I personally believe as humans prisoners posses basic human rights (Except it affects the security of the Nation) which should include the right to elect representatives who would protect and fight for their interest like every other voter, If we claim to be operating a democratic system, i believe it should be wholesome and not disenfranchise a group.

The level of Political Consciousness in Nigeria especially amongst youths is encouraging thus i hope we can debate this intelligently.

@Kobojunkie the main idea here is, we have a group of people who are being disenfranchised/ marginalized cos of their status, yet decisions that affect their daily welfare are made without a choice.

We all agree our country is in dire need of Prison Reform, but does the vote of the people involved matter? should it play a part?

@Moses thanks for the comment.

They were first a citizen before they became a prisoner, so it's their right by default.

I do not belong to the school of thought that believes that denying prisoners the right to vote is an effective deterrent for offenders and future offenders.

i believe prisoners should be allowed to vote but as a realist, i dont see how their vote could be significant in the overall election result

I don't think prisoners should be allowed to vote because first it should serve as one of the punishemnt for their offences secondly trust our politicians they will bastardize the process giving ammensty to criminals that are dangerous to the society,so I don't think they should be allowed to vote,

The United States is a democracy. Incarcerated felons do not vote with the exception of two states: Maine and Vermont.

If the person is awaiting trial, then he or she can vote. If a prisoner is serving a term, then he or she shouldn't be allowed to vote. It's called punishment. I don't recall misbehaving when I was a child and still being allowed to play with toys and have dessert. You do the crime, you do the time, and that involves losing privileges that people who abide by the law enjoy.

And you feel inhibiting prisoners from making a choice on who represents them would serve as a good deterant, if the prisons are supposed to rehabilitate like we believe, shouldn't prisoners be encouraged to carry out a simple civic duty of voting, so that when they get back into the society they do not develop political Apathy? and can easily blend into the society without feeling left out?

what happens to those who are serving jail terms despite being innocent or in the case of Nigeria, thousands awaiting trial after 7-10 years?

My exact thought, here like u said they are done after serving jail terms, yet we are made to believe its to rehabilitate/ reform them, after jail terms, everything is taken away from them, they can't get a job cos no one wants to employ them, they can't vote and what do they resort to, crime, drugs, prostitution of course, its a viscous cycle.

For the period i lived in Nigeria, i am perfectly aware that Prisoners never voted, they remain maligned and disenfranchised, although i can't quote a particular section of the constitution where that is written.

It depends on the state. There are states where you can vote as soon as you're released. There are some where you can vote after serving parole and probation. As for those where you can't vote after serving, it depends on the severity of the crime, how many times the person has committed the crime, etc.
