Cymbal:a trial. x^2+y^2+8x+8y+6=0 or maybe put r=6+4/6-4=10/2=5.. (x-h)^2+(y-k)^2=r^2. (x-4)^2+(y-5)^2=5^2: expand it to get. X^2+y^2+8x-10y+16=0 |

bolkay47:(0, 4) doesnt satisfy the equation, so that rules your attempt off. By the way, how did you manage to conjure that? Show steps, maybe we can learn |

Cymbal:you may use this: det[x^2+y^2, x, y, 1; x_1^2+y_1^2, x_1, y_1, 1; x_2^2+y_2^2, x_2, y_2, 1; x_3^2+y_3^2, x_3, y_3, 1]=0. Then, expand and simplify. (this should be simpler since half of the ordinates are 0's). NOTE det means determinant comma (,) means next column semicolon (; ) means next line or line break |

Laplacian:I guessed as much. I solved and I got that the bomb landed a whooping 1106.57m. That's like 1.1km any reason to justify that long distance the bomb traveled from a close-to-earth height of 600m? |

bolkay47:(0, 4) still doesn't satisfy it. That means something is wrong somewhere. |

factorial1:yes thats true,just as ideally cos90 is not equals to 0,it is cos theta approaches 0 as thata approaches 90 degrees ,so often for certain mathematical functions we can only try as much as to converge to a certain value,basically because this functions basically break down to infinite series |

There are 3 boxes. One of them has a car that you get to keep (don't ask how a car fits in a box). On each box there is a statement. You know that only one of the statements is true. The statements are: Box 1 The car is in this box Box 2 The car is not in this box Box 3 The car is not in box 1 Which box has the car? a Box 1 b Box 2 c Box 3 d None of them e Not enough information

Determine the type of conic section represented by the equation x2/k + y2/(k-9) = 1 in each of the following cases. (i.) k > 9 ( ii.) 0 < k > 9 and ( iii. ) k < 0. For the case k = 25 ,find the focus or foci and the equation of the directrix or directrixes of the Conic. Tag: laplacian,agentofchange1,jackpot,benji93,arithmetic,detj4u. |

Re: Nairaland Mathematics Clinic by benji93: 11:44am On Apr 16, 2015 |
Laplacian:you are right about the use of the theorem of intersecting cords in a circle,but i think you made a wrong assumption by thinking that the x axis passes through the center of the circle unless of course you are right because the question is incomplete,so taking this without any assumptions if the length of the second intercept on the x axis is X then the intercept on the y-axis is 6X/4 |
Re: Nairaland Mathematics Clinic by Arithmetic(m): 6:13pm On Apr 16, 2015 |
Cymbal:Since P is equidistant from A(a,0) and B(-a,0); => PA² = (x-a)² + y² => PB² = (x+a)² +y² PA²-PB² = 2k². => (x-a)² + y² - (x+a)² - y²= 2k²; Simplifying; => x² -2ax + a² + y² - x²-2ax-a²- y² =2k² => -4ax = 2k². =>2ax + k² = 0. |
Re: Nairaland Mathematics Clinic by Arithmetic(m): 6:33pm On Apr 16, 2015 |
Cymbal: Rearranging, we have; x² - 2x + y² + 4y = 11, Adding (1+4) to both sides, we have; x² - 2x + 1 + y² + 4y + 4 = 11+1+4; => (x-1)² + (y+2)² = 16. => (x-1)² + (y+2)² = 4². Comparing with the equation of a circle, we obtain its center C(1,-2). The line then passes through the points (0,0) and (1,-2). The slope m= -2, we thereby use y-y1 = m(x-x1); x1= 1, y1=-2 m=-2; => y+2=-2(x-1), simplifying; y + 2x = 0 |
