logica: The project will eventually merge with Android or die.

Seriously? That will never happen. its not android code at any level

the only thing it shares with android is the kernel, and the kernel is LINUX kernel, not android kernel.

watch the presentation video.

they may use similar tech, but its different.

if that was possible, Maemo would have been merged with android

okpara ugo: What language is that

Ubuntu? its a south african word, origin from the Bantu language

it was chosen as the name for the OS because the founder of canonical (the company behind ubuntu) is actually a (south african) brit.......

the idea is centered around humanity. the ubuntu motto is software for humans
with a human face, literally free.......

Archbishop Desmond Tutu offered a definition in a 1999 book:[4]

A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, based from a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.

I have always dreamed of something like this...making low cost devices with high efficiency for Africans with an OS that is sleek and evolving continuously...Imagine desktops, phones, tablets accessible to the internet coupled with high affordability everywhere..It will surely break the hold of samsung, apple and windows who are milking us dry...

if its built around the Android OS, isnt it basically an Android phone same way Ubuntu OS in computers is a Linux distro?

It WILL have to be made to work with Android or it will die.

ITS NOT BUILT AROUND OR WITH ANDROID

its a different OS.

it can use android hardware DRIVERS so can be easily flashed on any android device

it can also run on INTEL x86 hardware.

NOT EVERY FREE OS IS ANDROID ON A PHONE. JEEBUS

Are they made in south africa?coz that sounds like south-african name.
Ubuntu is the name of the rebel leader in congo democratic.

tbh, I'm not really a fan of the Ubuntu OS. sure I t has saved me several times (especially one time Windows absolutely refused to boot) but I like ready made and try to dodge command lines and terminals as much as possible....which is a specialty of Windows....

i'll still love to check out the mobile OS tho....

Ubuntu is not built on the Android Kernel but rather the Linux kernel. it originates from the Debian Family of linux distros.

android and Ubuntu (the mobile version) are both (and separate) Linux based mobile operating systems.

careytommy:

ah, ok i see.

thanks for pointing that out. its a fundamental error.
the thing is the ARM fork of the Linux kernel used to be called the android kernel, well because google forked it for android and were not really committing code changes to the main tree

that has since changed and the "android" kernel has been merged fully with the main linux kernel. hence its technically no longer the "android" kernel but the "linux" kernel simply.

i will change the OP as appropriate

2014 release date is too far away to sustain any form of excitement . .by then IOS, Android and WP may have more compelling tech than what this Ubuntu show off suggest

Meanwhile the more , the merrier

IOS, Android,Windows Phone, BB 10, Sailfish, Firefox and now Ubuntu grin

APPS for all Ubuntu devices

Ubuntu Software Centre has been a part of Ubuntu for years, and we’ll extend it to deliver phone apps too.

Already established as the most popular way to find new software on the Ubuntu desktop, it enables Ubuntu users to download and install applications in seconds. And here’s the really amazing thing. With the arrival of the Ubuntu SDK, apps can be written to work on all Ubuntu form-factors: it’s the same Ubuntu OS on the desktop and on the phone, so a single native application can work on both. Which means you re-use most of the app when you add support for a new form-factor.

jmaine: 2014 release date is too far away to sustain any form of excitement . .by then IOS, Android and WP may have more compelling tech than what this Ubuntu show off suggest

well actually the thing is this is made by an OPENSOURCE OS company.

The OS will soon be made available for ANYONE to port to any device.
and it will be easy to port, very easy especially because it shares a kernel and can use the same hardware drivers as android phones.

what that effectively means is that by june or even earlier, you could be running this on your present android phone.

2014 is like a target for having devices that ship from the manufacturers with it pre-installed. i guess the idea is that with a full year of development and making apps, it should be ready for any willing company to present a phone.

its a lot like your desktop Ubuntu OS. most of us did not buy our desktops and laptops with ubuntu from factory. we downloaded the OS and installed it.

Nowadays there are companies making laptops etc with ubuntu from factory, but that was not how it started and not how it gained the users it has.

so its really not like the present model in the mobile world. this aims to shake things up

Shollypopz: Ubuntu is a Linux Operating system. U know, like Windows is an OS from Microsoft

I'm quite shocked at the amount of ppl asking what Ubuntu is, are y'all just feigning ignorance

My dear, take aside Windows and Mac, how many other operating systems do you think an average Nigerian knows? Infact! An average Nigerian knows Windows only and have no idea what Linux, Mac OS and the likes are.... It only takes IT professionals (but not limited to) in most cases to know all these things...
Re: Meet Ubuntu Phone Os. by 4llerbuntu(m): 12:58pm On Jan 03, 2013
i guess if you need concrete proof that folks don't ever read or notice whats posted on NL, this thread is it.

There has been a Ubuntu thread on the Computer section STICKIED for ages.

i had even purposely tried to start "wars" with texazzpete (the ever reliable bad belle peep who opposes nice things publicly grin ) just to give it some visibility and traction.

now people who post on computer section actually ask what UBUNTU is? grin grin grin grin grin

Imma start a company to push this thing for free in naija for realz man

Apples and Oranges.

1. Maemo was a project practically left on its own. Nokia backed it a bit then betrayed us.

This is backed by a committed Open Source Company. Microsoft got their mole into Nokia (Elop) and the rest is history

If you have noticed, the really thriving Linux Distros i.e Ubuntu and Red Hat are backed by companies committed to open source and not just hobbyists and profit making companies.

2. This a a Full Mobile OS, not an attempt to cramp a desktop OS on to the phone like we were doing before.

the desktop part comes with the UBUNTU FOR ANDROID project. and it is like two separate worlds existing side by side on the phone

i get the skepticism, but one thing i can vouch for is that Canonical do not take things up and ditch it along the way.

actually this is not new, the idea has been floated over 2 years ago. to see it come together is exhilarating.

i guess my fellow ubuntu users are now beginning to see why Ubuntu went with the Unity desktop and those much maligned innovations like HUD.

so, it will get supported well. believe me it will.

and thankfully, no one will come and tell us this looks like IOS or any other mobile OS out there now. so it IS possible to innovate. Linux has always innovated anyway

Re: Meet Ubuntu Phone Os. by donaremu(m): 1:22pm On Jan 03, 2013
The beauty of this is OS invention(Ubuntu for Android) is that our Smart Mobile phone can also be used as a PC (that is, now multi-core Android phones can be PCs too). Ubuntu for Android enables high-end Android handsets to run Ubuntu, the world’s favourite free PC desktop operating system. So users get the Android they know on the move, but when they connect their phone to a monitor, mouse and keyboard, it becomes a PC.
