Sponsor Nigerian Chess by RushPark: 4:29pm On Jan 12, 2013
I'll explain our idea very briefly. Nigerian chess is currently declining with only the Akwa Ibom state government and Nigerian breweries Ltd sponsoring the only two major tournaments in the country. Our idea is to create awareness of the problems facing this sport so as to get companies, state governments, multi nationals to sponsor FIDE rated tournaments in the country.

We've designated 3 levels of support for this campaign.

Level 3 : View this post. -> This will increase the number of views. The link to this page will be sent to relevant authorities in the sports ministry.

Level 2 : Comment on this post -> Any ideas that will help us get sponsorship, any information that can point us in the right direction. This will keep this thread alive for others to view.

Level 1 : Sponsor -> This doesn't have to be monetary. There are lots of ideas. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

N/B : This will be a long running campaign. All participants will be sent an appreciation e-mail from the Akwa Ibom state sports ministry.

Call : Rush -> 08037761082, George -> 08038915797 for sponsorship ideas.

I am impressed with the awareness going on in Chess on this thread. Chess is a very brilliant game and it really equips the mind on how to beat tough challenges. I hope the game gets the proper spotlight it deserves. Many people who love Chess leave it because it seems like a sport for Idle people.

If the right sponsorship for this game comes in, we will have many innovators and creative minds developing themselves. I hope the right sponsors come in. This game deserves all the attention.

The total prize money for the first tournament mentioned above was about 2 Million naira, the following year in 2012 the prize money was more than doubled to 6 million naira. The Akwa Ibom state government has invested massively to promote this sport and it's sister, scrabble. But as we all know from history, the government has never been a fantastic sponsor of sports in nigeria. Even our "primal" sport, football lacks adequate government support.
We are therefore using this forum to call out to companies in the private sector to lend a hand.

When the current governor of Akwa Ibom state, chief Godswill Akpabio leaves office, chess might not get the kind of sponsorship it is currently enjoying.

Chess is a suppressd sport in this part of the world unfortunately. But one way we may help ourselves is to start and join small chess clubs and gradually gain popularity that could get us sponsors.

I know over there in india there are chess clubs scattered everywhere there like we have bars over here, that sort of initiative is what garners encouragement from sponsors and FIDE. But first i think we should make the first move.
