Ever wondered what separates companies high on the employee satisfaction list from the rest? It’s company culture.

To far too many businesses, company culture is nothing more than an afterthought. Company outings, employee rewards and perks are often thought of as enough to build a great company culture. The reality is, your company culture doesn’t come from the top down and instead starts with your hiring. Get your hires wrong and you’ll set a precedent for how the rest of your organisation will act. You need to be asking:
1.Does the work they’ll be doing inspire them?
2.Will they be proud of the work they’re doing?
3.Would they pick this job for their career?
If the answer to any of these is no, you can surely bet that they’re not going to be the right person to help build your company’s culture with. The best thing about company culture is that it’s easy to turn around with the right steps. The first step is to take the time and listen to your employees gripes with the company. You might be moving too slow, have not enough structure or simply not be well equipped to do the job. These are the issues you need to face before you can build any meaningful company culture.

Once your employee’s issues are resolved, turn your attention to ways in which you can inspire, motivate and reignite your staff with employee rewards programs and incentives. Lastly, think about what your employees value from an employer. For some people, that may be the quirky shenanigans many companies pass off as ‘culture’, but many may be more interested in flexible work hours or child-friendly offices.

Overall, company culture is grown from your employees and comes from the bottom up. Turn your employees into brand ambassadors, give them a voice and make their work life easier to turn your stagnant company culture into one to be admired.
