ekene means praise
ekenedilichukwu means praise be to god

two different names, on my birth certificate is the first one 'ekene', why am i obliged to take on such a long name of 'ekenedilichukwu' - its not about being ashamed, that just isnt my name

Igbo names have meanings. They are usually long and are indeed sentences. But for convinience sake our ancestors usually cut them short.
Example, Osita is an Igbo name. The real name is Ositadimma which means " it is well from today onwards"

Another example is Kamsi. The full name is Kamsiyochikwu which means "just the way I asked God" or "exactly what I asked God"

So yours is no exception, ekenedilichukwu as you say means praise(actually thanks, praise=otito, thanks=ekene) be to god. I'm sure you don't expect to be called the full name do you? cheesy

Imagine being called ekenedilichukwu all the time grin
So it's cut to ekene.

Same way Elizabeth is Liz
Robert is bob
Williams is bill
Etc
