1. Only publish data that is neither confidential nor personal.

2. Change your password at least once a month.

3. Only access your own social networks on your computer.

4. Clear your history atleast every week and never auto save your password.

5. Only accept friend requests or request friends that you know.

Nice one!

Just some more I could think of now:

- Keep your primary email address private: don't sign up on forums/social networks with it. Get a free email account from the numerous providers
- Don't give out information simply because it is requested: No matter how comfortable a "stranger" may be or sound, be wary what information requests you respond to. Social Engineering is a unique and almost omnipotent hacking technique.
- Don't allow others to draw you into conflict: Its safer to ignore personal attacks. Respond in like tone gives the attacker the pleasure that he/she has succeeded in getting to you. Ignore and they'll pass you over to easier preys.
- Lurk in a new forum/social network to learn local customs: If you are in group/group chat/discussion board, watch quietly for a while to know what's really up before you engage in topics you wish to. And oh, don't respond to private chats request immediately...stalkers abound especially if you have a sexy username!
- Watch what you "say" online: words hurt...deep atimes. Cases have occurred in the past where some people resolve to suicide after being attacked by others. Type what you can say to someone's face (politely)
- Watch the pictures you uploads: You don't want an online stalker to gain knowledge of your true self!
- Check the Website Address Carefully: Phising sites exists that look like (or even better) than the original website. Check the address pane of the browser and look critically at the address. http://glbank.com isn't http://gtbank.com. A slight over-look and you miss it.

kglamour:
2. Change your password at least once a month
Use combinations of numbers, alphabets , and symbols as your password so you dont have to change them every month like the op sugested.
Eg Username : Seun
Password : Mukinababy001hasMY@4EVER# cheesy

If you follow the OP's Advice on number 2 and not mine, then you would loose almost all your accounts grin

When paying for goods/services online ensure the website url changes from http to https, that indicate that your transaction is safe since it will be encrypted over the network, the website merchant don't have details of your card. Happy shopping.
