@donwanwun - said, "Previously rational people of the left with a healthy hatred of right-wing religion and its abhorrent demands have mutated into apologists for religious threats, violence and mass murder."

Typical smear on people who understand that:

1. Western leaders are the ones who have and are complicit with Islamist forces. See Mark Curtis's "Secret Affairs: Britain's Collusion with Radical Islam."

To quote:

"Drawing on declassified government files and new material unearthed during the 'Arab Spring'. "Secret Affairs" exposes how Britain has supported radical Islamic groups in Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Libya, the Balkans, Syria, Indonesia and Egypt. Mark Curtis also documents Britain's hidden alliance with the two major state sponsors of radical Islam - Saudi Arabia and Pakistan - and how British policies of 'divide and rule', rooted in the Empire, used Islamic forces to promote imperial interests in India, Palestine, Jordan and Yemen."

2. hat the War on Terror is conducted with the neo-liberl, neo-colonial purpose of destroying or curbing independent nations with desired resources, and to ensure those resources are exploited with as little of the wealth being diverted to the actual people of those nations which are the location of those resources.

In respect of Wole Soyinka and this piece - how the mighty, or, at least, a talented dramatist and anti-colonial leftist has fallen!

Soyinka now welcomes the old colonial power, France, and will no doubt welcome all those neo-liberal forces the French, US and EU neo-colonial powers will want to unleash in Mali and the continent of Africa.

In fact he does not have to welcome many of them, because many have penetrated the "Dark Continent" already, and are only too anxious to disempower any state structures, if they are not complicit, or use any ruse to empower Western corporations and once again steal the resources of Africa and leave its people in their wake.

Here is a much better piece that begins to present the realities of the latest neo-colonial incursion into Mali and Africa:
To quote:

http://www.zcommunications.org/no-security-firms-for-african-refugees-opportunities-and-war-in-mali-by-ramzy-baroud

To quote:

"As France, the US and EU countries determine the future of Mali through military efforts and political roadmaps, the country itself is so weakened and politically disfigured beyond any possibility of confronting outside designs. For G4S and other security firms, Mali now tops the list in Africa’s emerging security market. Nigeria and Kenya follow closely, with possibilities emerging elsewhere."

The appalling Islamists in northern Mali, many once the heroes of the war on Gaddafi in Libya, have given the West that opportunity to move in on Mali and neighbouring states.
Taken from a debate in the Guardian

What should be at the top of Africa's agenda should be the creation of a democratic and progressive federation of African states, through which Africa should be sorting its own problems out, and looking at how its resources could be used to promote the lives of all africans.

Instead we have a once sane African playwright spouting obscurantist nonsense:

"The world is facing viral mutations of the human psyche."

A medical/psycho hybrid phrase leads us nowhere but to a limitless and opportunist war on something that is about as tangible and concrete as the worst parts of the Book of Revelations. But is that not what the inheritors of mad King George Bush II's mantel need to pursue their insanity, their goal to exploit the world's resources to the death, and marginalise however many hundred of millions or billions of the world's people in the process?
