[1] The team was originally called the Red Devils by the British who brought football to Nigeria
[2] At independence, the name was changed to the Green Eagles
[3] After we won our first Nations Cup in 1980, the name was changed to the Super Eagles
[4] After we won our second Nations Cup in 1994, Nigeria was ranked fifth in the FIFA World rankings, the highest achieved by an African team.
[5] The Super Eagles have reached the FIFA World Cup round of 16 twice
[6] After playing other colonies in unofficial games Nigeria played its first official game in October 1949, while still a British colony
[7] Nigeria's first major footballing success was winning the gold medal at the Second All-Africa games in 1973
[8] The winner of the African Cup of Nations gets play in the Fifa Confederations Cup. In 1995, Nigeria represented Africa in the tournament and came fourth, losing out to Mexico in a penalty shoot out. If we win today, we will play in the Confederations Cup in Brazil this summer
[9] In 1998, Nigeria was the first team on the planet to qualify for the World Cup with devastating wins against Guinea, Burkina Faso and Kenya
[10] Nigeria has been the most consistent team in the African Cup of Nations, wining the trophy twice, winning silver four times and wining bronze six times.
