Should Banks Charge Customers For Unsolicited SMS Alerts? by jamace(m): 10:22pm On Feb 10, 2013
Banks Are Stealing From Customers Through Alerts

Can you imagine my banks deducting money from my account for sending me alert when I withdraw or deposit money? Again, during festive periods, say Sallah and Christmas, banks send best wishes message to me but charge my account for it. Is that right? What about deductions made from my account for an unsolicited birthday wish by the bank? Is it proper? When I think of the customer base of these banks and the amount they make, I feel the banks are fleecing the customers illegally.

I feel deductions due to unsolicited best wishes on festive days and customers birthdays by banks should be borne by the banks.

House, do you observe this and what do you have to say about it?

Most banks probably don't do that. What's the name of your bank?

That's not a good idea, in my opinion. Alerts are very important or security reasons.

Imagine GT Bank deducted 360 Naira from my account in January alone for sms.

This is annoying considering the fact that the sms usually comes so late most times the I am better off not receiving it.

That is not the issue. The issue is that they deduct money from the account any how. Take for instance, I did one transfer of money and I got about 4 alerts on it and I was made to pay for those alerts.

Bros, VAT is charged on virtually every transaction... I'm sure you're referring to the 5% VAT on your monthly COT. That's standard.

Well,u are d one that regista 4 d sms,if u are not satisfied wit it anymore, walk 2 your bank & deregista it.but rememba, its good 2 use it 4 security reasons. Meanwhile no bank shd charge your acount 4 non-transaction sms such as birthday, new year, easter, etc.if your bank does, walk into d bank & demand 4 your money.they do not have d right 2 rob u.

1.You can actually do witout alerts on ur acc if u handle ur Debit & Credit card pins aright.
2.All sms notifications are autom8d & triggers off each time dere's a prompt.
3.Internet INTERBANK transfers attract #100 flat.
4.Dese alert charges are discretional & varies 4rm bank 2 bank.
5.VAT (10%) is charged ONLY on interest accrued.
COT is commision on turn over on current acc . Usually #5/#1000.
Like some1 advise here, just deactiv8 ur sms & calm down, it helps.

@artistree: deactivating deposit/withdrawal alerts is a bad idea, and it may not necessarily stop them from sending birthday and holiday alerts.

They were suppose to charge you if the transfer was the other way round i.e from savings to current. Guys please go and disable sms alart and stop complaining, no establishment exist to make loss, imagine if 10 million transactions take place in a day and they all receive sms, do the maths and let me the cost losss to the bank. They are their to make profit my dear, not to promote ur interest

I 've requested that my GT and FCMB accts alert be sent to my e-mail on several occasions (filled so many forms) but they keep sending me SMS's and deducting my acct for it, I feel there is a conspiracy theory behind their reluctance. BTW NCC has slashed the price of SMS and I think the banks should slash theirs as well.

@martyns303, don't 4get dat dese transfer charges are relative 2. I knw some banks dnt charge 4 INTRABANK transfer ie transfer within same bank but INTERBANK transfers are compulsory...#100. But if his bank charged him INTRABANK, den it's their prerogative.
Apply 4 email alerts, it's free & convenient.
