Onaiyekan stands a better chance due to his age and his reformist attitude. Arinze is 81 and it makes no sense to elect a 81 year old to replace an 85 year old. Also, he is a conservative just like Ratzinger and at this juncture, the church needs someone who can reform without changing too much at once.

onaiyekan has only been a cardinal for months, i don't think a conclave will elect such a junoir cardinal as good as he may be. So in the case of an african pope with all the nigerian cardinals hanging on a balance, it might fall to cardinal peter tuscon of ghana.

His excuse is not good enough. He is supposed to die in that office.

The suddeness of the resignation is a good indication that he is being forced , by unknown forces within or outside the Vatican, to abdicate.

From all the above, we can infer that papal resignations have only occured during periods of schisms or extra-ordinary circumstances. Age and Ailing health has never been one of them.
So despite this official reason, I have no doubts, that in a short while, we shall see real reasons for this forced abdication of Pope Benedict.
