FYI: Nigerian Cardinal Francis Arinze ISN'T ELIGIBLE to become pope. He turned 80 in Nov, which disqualifies him from voting/being named. |

I do believe that we are all entitled to our opinions but abusing other christian denominations at the slightest chance smacks of immaturity. No one is good but God,even if there has been allegations of misconduct levelled against some catholic clergy, note that it is an allegation against some, not all.10 percent can never cancell out 90 percent. However, among every religion, denomination and in the rank and file of the laity evil exists. Some of us heaping insults on clergymen here you need to realise that you do not possess a licence to commit sin yourselves, examine your conscience and realise that we are all human, frail and rely every day on the grace of God. 4 Likes |

merengue:onaiyekan has only been a cardinal for months, i don't think a conclave will elect such a junoir cardinal as good as he may be. So in the case of an african pope with all the nigerian cardinals hanging on a balance, it might fall to cardinal peter tuscon of ghana. |

naijaswag: FYI: Nigerian Cardinal Francis Arinze ISN'T ELIGIBLE to become pope. He turned 80 in Nov, which disqualifies him from voting/being named.it's so sad this man was denied the palpacy in 2005 even though pope benedict really did'nt want it. Well if the conclave is really looking to africa for a pontiff then it's gonna be peter tuscon of ghana. |

All the popes in the last 600 years died in office, This one is resigning for "medical reasons" I smell a rat! Where is my Tin Foil hat! |
Re: Pope Benedict To Resign by plaetton: 6:01pm On Feb 11, 2013 |
na2day!: Hey, You beat me to it. This is an abdication, not a resignation. I smell a big big rat. The catholic church does not break with tradition for no reason. His excuse is not good enough. He is supposed to die in that office. The suddeness of the resignation is a good indication that he is being forced , by unknown forces within or outside the Vatican, to abdicate. Coupe de etats in the Vatican are not new. Stay tuned. |

plaetton: well nothing is certain, and in addition i think there should be a pr team to handle the effects of this "announcement". i just wonder if its a general changing of the guard, since a monarch also resigned recently in europe. all these changes are too sudden, doesnt seem to bode well. and he was doing so well on twitter!!!! Reaching out to the internet generation. |

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer. Asking Virgin Mary to pray for d church is frank blasphemy, even by d pope claiming to be a successor of St Peter. God help catholics. |

Here are some examples of previous popes who have given up the papacy: – In 1045, Benedict IX, renowned as one of the most disgraceful popes the Church has known, sold his papacy to his godfather, pious priest John Gratian, so that he could get married. Reportedly unable to persuade the woman in question to have him, he returned to seize Rome. – In 1046, Gratian, who had reigned shortly as pope Gregory VI and was considered the true pope by many despite Benedict IX’s violent return to claim the throne, was forced to resign himself amid accusations he had bought the papacy. – In 1294, Celestine V, a simple hermit who was elected to end a deadlock among cardinals, proved incompetent and stepped down after reigning a mere five months. He had issued a decree declaring it possible for a pope to resign, opening up the way for his own departure. – In 1415, Gregory XII resigned in a bid to end the “Western Schism”, when two rival claimants declared themselves pope in Pisa and Avignon and threatened to tear apart Roman Catholicism. – In 1804, Pius VII signed an abdication of the papal throne before setting out for Paris to crown Napoleon to be put into effect in case he were imprisoned in France. – During the Second World War, Pius XII is reported to have signed a document which said that he was to be considered as having resigned his office should he be kidnapped by the Nazis. Several popes were resigned or martyred as the Roman Empire collapsed, and the Eternal City — sacked and depopulated by barbarian hordes — fell prey to quarreling factions. But the historical details of how they fell are often lost in the mist of time, and often only the legends remain.(AFP) |

Re: Pope Benedict To Resign by plaetton: 6:37pm On Feb 11, 2013 |
kaisy1980: From all the above, we can infer that papal resignations have only occured during periods of schisms or extra-ordinary circumstances. Age and Ailing health has never been one of them. So despite this official reason, I have no doubts, that in a short while, we shall see real reasons for this forced abdication of Pope Benedict. |
