I don't know if there's a thread for this already but wanted to know if this film contest is credible. Villageboi and Speedyboi, there's no chatroom here so I had to call you out haha, sorry. http://afrinollyshortfilmcompetition.com/ I haven't seen the films being nominated but they are taking votes now. Can you have a look and let me know what you think? I'll try to watch them too |
Re: Afrinolly Short Film Competition by boblee2u: 10:10pm On Feb 15, 2013 |
It is credible and you can vote at http://afrinollyshortfilmcompetition.com/vote.php The Afrinolly Short Film Competition is aimed at digitally showcasing African cinema talent and providing a platform to foster the generation of African content and make same available online. It is supported by MTN, Goethe Institut, Blackberry, IREP and Google as the social media partner. Re: Afrinolly Short Film Competition by VillageBoi(m): 12:59am On Feb 16, 2013 |
I've just watched all the films in the 'Narrative' section. There are about 3 that I like, might vote for one of them later. You just have to wonder if the judges were on crack because some of the films are WTF? Please can y'all watch these films and let us know your views. Thanks. PS. I'll watch the docs tomorrow, I hope they are much better! |
Re: Afrinolly Short Film Competition by ijebabe: 7:44am On Feb 16, 2013 |
Hahaha! Judges on crack got me laughing I wasn't impressed with these ones: The Promise USA Dance with the Devil South Africa Jayson's Hope South Africa These were good: Philia South Africa When Fishes Drown Nigeria To serve with all our strength Nigeria But Im torn between these: Dara Ju (Better) USA Unspoken United Kingdom Enitan Nigeria 4-1-9 USA |
Re: Afrinolly Short Film Competition by VillageBoi(m): 9:32am On Feb 16, 2013 |
The ones I like the most (in order) are Enitan Nigeria Unspoken United Kingdom Dara Ju USA The worst films of the bunch (in no order) to me are - Jayson's Hope South Africa This film is so dumb I was "dump folded and have no words to alter!" See image below. 4-1-9 USA Hated the acting and it was just daft. A family with a mega house like that and their 'deals' na 2-by-2 visa? When it should be a mega Billion oil-deal. Completely wrong 'settings' and then SWAT magically appears out of their 'ewedu' garden . The film dey lame on so many levels.

Re: Afrinolly Short Film Competition by ijebabe: 12:38pm On Feb 16, 2013 |
Lol! 4-1-9 wasn't bad, I only got confused at the end of it when they arrested Ade. It seems Segun is greedy and will do any shady deal. He's not his father, clearly. I also didn't know why he was obsessed with going to the USA, they looked rich enough. I think their wealth was an illusion coz the grounds were badly kept, the building was deteriorating, maybe they weren't that wealthy... Jayson's Hope made me cringe. A poorly made film but it had a good story. Too bad everyone bleeped it up. |
Re: Afrinolly Short Film Competition by VillageBoi(m): 1:25pm On Feb 16, 2013 |
ijebabe: All of the films had something good in them; even 4-1-9 that I disliked the most. PROMISE made me laugh a lot... I really liked when the 'ring' fell out and she started going nuts over the phone and then he said "I beg chillax with this ya nonzenze, no be the real thing!". When I always say 'Story is King' I really man everything that makes a good 'story' from plot, pacing, beats and so on... One thing I really don't like in films is when they make things 'magically' happen because they can't figure out the plot or how to make it make sense. And a number of the films did exactly that. I've now whittled mine down to 2 - Enitan & Unspoken. Dara Ju I've dropped because on 2nd thoughts I don't buy what they are trying to sell to me as the 2 main points. Well I've got to find any reason to knock a film until I have my number 1... but I think I already know which one it is. Let's look on the bright side. South Africa wey dey kill us anyhow on quality feature films had the highest number of absolute duds. Jayson's Whatever and pin-hole kamera Devil plus him Sista... and ALL the Nigerian films were good. |
Re: Afrinolly Short Film Competition by ijebabe: 2:34pm On Feb 16, 2013 |
For sentimental reasons I know you'll go for Enitan That was a really good film but Unspoken was equally good and I think the film was only 10mins not 15 like the rest. Captivating till the end. Short films are known to have that surrealist element and Dara Ju was no exception. The harsh truth according to me was that he placed a girl who didn't even know him above the needs of his family. In truth, he told too many lies he kept getting entangled in them. The only film (besides Enitan) that made me feel what the characters were feeling. I actually closed my eyes when his mom walked into the room at that party. All I could do was just cover my eyes and say f**k repeatedly I don't know how those South African films got nominated in the first place cos they weren't good except for Philia The Promise. The father's prayer towards the end is what made the movie for me but I couldn't rate the film for just those few seconds or so The short films I posted some time ago should be in competitions like these, wonder why they aren't |
Re: Afrinolly Short Film Competition by VillageBoi(m): 4:28pm On Feb 16, 2013 |
I am actually a fan of Unspoken and have been since I first saw it in the cinema almost a year ago... it was just well done on many, many levels. Funnily enough my 2 fav short films for a few years are both around the 15min length - Vicky and Sam - https://vimeo.com/16044812 Your Lucky Day - https://vimeo.com/14017511 You are very right in saying some of the shorts you have posted here should be well up there compared to some of the stuff they selected... they, the judges, def know what bad batch of crack they were smoking lol. Yeah Philia was the only good SA film. That father prayer at the end of The Promise was totally lol'able. Hmmmmm Dara Ju, I wouldn't describe it as surrealist at all though. But that's one of the good and interesting things about films... we, the audience, do look at things differently. Can't wait to watch the Docs this evening/tonight. |

ijebabe: I don't know if I'll enjoy the documentaries but I'll watch them too I hope I do since I've always liked documentaries. Unfortunately both shorts I just posted are on Vimeo which I hear is hard to watch in Naija BUT to those watching from there luckily Your Lucky Day is on Youtbe - posted below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlMOoNeC0RA |
Re: Afrinolly Short Film Competition by ijebabe: 5:56pm On Feb 16, 2013 |
VillageBoi:There was nothing lucky in that movie! Nicely done though. It was packed with content and dialogue, did not feel like 15 mins! |
Re: Afrinolly Short Film Competition by VillageBoi(m): 6:10pm On Feb 16, 2013 |
ijebabe:Exactly! When it first came out a couple of years ago everyone was like "Nah, it can't be 15mins long, it was so interesting the time just flew by." Oh no! I've just realised the Youtube video is not even HD. If you can, do see it on Vimeo. Come oh! Na only we two get interest for this AfriNolly thread? |
Re: Afrinolly Short Film Competition by ijebabe: 6:19pm On Feb 16, 2013 |

ijebabe: Awww, Vicky and Sam was really cute. A very simple idea but a very good film Yeah Vicky and Sam is a really good film... and part of the brilliance is the 3 filmmakers in the film that were trying to make a film that would have been rubbish. You can call me out anytime, I no dey hide for interesting threads for here o! |
Re: Afrinolly Short Film Competition by ijebabe: 6:52pm On Feb 16, 2013 |
OK I'll be back after watching the documentaries. |
Re: Afrinolly Short Film Competition by boblee2u: 10:53pm On Feb 16, 2013 |
'Vicky and Sam' and 'Your Lucky Day' are two nice Shortfilms but were they produced by Africans? And were they both made publicly available between January 1, 2012 and now cause if not they are not eligible to enter for the Afrinolly Short Film Competition according to the competition rules here - http://afrinollyshortfilmcompetition.com/rules/ c. The Competition is open solely to original, newly-created Entries, or original, previously-created Entries which have not been distributed to the public (including, without limitation, display on the YouTube Website, posting elsewhere on the internet, theatrical distribution, television broadcast or any other public dissemination) prior to January 1, 2012. Your Lucky Day for instance has been available on YouTube since 20 Aug. 2010 and am not even sure it was produced by an African. I have watched almost all the entries and they are great. Nollywood has a bright future.

boblee2u: 'Vicky and Sam' and 'Your Lucky Day' are two nice Shortfilms but were they produced by Africans? Boblee... For someone that is most probably working for AfriNolly it is surprising you don't know entries for the competition closed a while back. Secondly I'm not sure you read and understood the posts that have been going on... just saying... because your post, in line with what we've been talking about, is odd, very, very odd. |

These are my favourites Wheels on the Bus Zimbabwe The Deadwood (I didn't have to watch this as I'd seen it a couple weeks ago!) Nigeria A Gateway Into Kano Nigeria Hustle On A Mile Nigeria Bless-In Nigeria This category is harder than the short films *sigh* |
Re: Afrinolly Short Film Competition by Nobody: 2:29pm On Feb 17, 2013 |
Mehn...no time for all this clicking clicking and watching joor. I will just watch your bests and I will be back. |
Re: Afrinolly Short Film Competition by VillageBoi(m): 2:37pm On Feb 17, 2013 |
ijebabe: I watched the documentaries! and I'm glad I did I'm glad you did. A very, very difficult section to select from because documentaries are nearly always intersting even if shot on a mobile phone. I'm still going to watch them all over again. I loved every single one you mentioned especially Wheels on the Bus & A Gateway Into Kano & Hustle on a Mile. I took Bless-In off the list immediately because, even though I think it is one of the best there they severely limited their 'audience' by it being in pidgin only with 'no' subtitles - I have to find a reason to remove points nah - *sigh*. It's gonna be hard reducing the remaining 9 to just one... why can't we just vote for everything? Lol. Honestly I can remove Black and Gold as well as Jagbe People now, now! Can remove more but I really like them ALL! Bummer!! |

speedyboi: Please where are the videos oooo?...that link ijebabe posted is too stressful. I need to know If the link is just for voting or I can watch the videos there. If I can....then I will just continue to follow their instructions Click here and it will ask you to log in with Google or Facebook - http://afrinollyshortfilmcompetition.com/vote From there you have the choice to go to the 'Narrative' section or 'documentary' section - they wrote the narrative section as 'short films' even though the documentaries are 'short' films too. Silly me, forgot to say... YES you can watch ALL of the films there.
