Taxpayers can lower their federal income tax obligation by claiming either the standard deduction or by itemizing their deductions. The Internal Revenue Service advises taxpayers to work their federal income tax returns using both methods, and to file their return using the method that provides the lowest federal income tax obligation. Taxpayers who choose to itemize their deductions may deduct cash and property they donated to qualified charitable organizations. Donations of cars are subject to special IRS rules.
