bright499: Farm afric, i have a room of 10*10 feet size. Can i start rearing layers there without cage. Thanks You can raise your birds (whether broilers or layers) without cages in that room space. Ensure it is well ventilated so as not to affect their productivity. Provide them with wooden laying boxes at strategic areas you notice they prefer laying. Just bear it in mind that battery cage system reduces the incidence of disease outbreaks (esp coccidiosis), keep your eggs clean and minimizes egg breakages and birds feasting on broken eggs. If you are housing as much as 1,000 laying birds, its better you opt for cages but nonetheless a humble start without cages is not and will never be prohibited. |

ProffT01, market strategies, vary with location. I believe and know there are eateries in Ebonyi, visit them and propose the idea of selling your mature broilers to them, discuss and know what they feel. Most of them dont buy birds as heavy as 1.8kg because they wont make profits since they portion it in quarters but will go for those that weigh 1.4kg and even less. For birds intended to be sold to eateries, you weigh as you feed them possibly twice a week as from the 5th week of age,to know when to sell off. On the other hand, frozen food dealers dont mind the weight of mature birds they buy from farms since they sell directly to consumers who will pay according to the choice they'v made during purchase. Dressing your birds before selling wont be a bad idea as it will single you out from your competitors. Do the dressing manually if you dont have resources for DEFEATHERING MACHINE yet but if you can afford it just make inquiries and buy one, it will save you the amount you pay for dressing to local job men per bird. For further consultation, call. 08179841277, 08095645892, 08099515923 |

CONTROL OF DISEASE OUTBREAK IN A FLOCK 1. Examination of the flock daily to detect sick birds 2. Isolate any showing signs of sickness 3. Every disease should be considered contagious until proven otherwise Different people should look after two groups- the isolated and the healthy to avoid disease spread 4. Accurate diagnosis is important between treatment 5. Slaughter every bird that is hopelessly sick avoid spilling the blood all over the place 6. All dead birds and litters from the sick pen must be buried or burnt 7. All houses should be cleaned and the house inspected for holes of rodents 8. Sudden change of food should be avoided. Changing of feed should be done gradually, mix the new feed with the old while increasing the percentage of the new feed until you gradually terminate the old one For more consultation on prevention and control of disease outbreak in a poultry flock call FARMERGIANT on 08179841277 or 08099515923 or 08095645892 |

When it comes to broiler (meat production), though the turn over is fast but if you get it wrong, you run into a big loss. First you ensure you feed the birds adlibitum even at night (that means you light up the pen). This ensures they attain not less than live market weight of 2.8kg in 7 weeks. The feed conversion rate (which is the ratio of the weight (kg) of feed given to chicken to the weight of dressed bird) helps determine what quantity to feed them on weekly. Keeping broiler any longer than 2 months means feeding them with the profit you would have made from them. Furthermore you must have a ready market before they attain market weight. Adding value by dressing before sales which boosts profit could be costly (though to avoid manual feather removing and charges by local job men and the length of time it takes, a defathering machine could be used). The longer the time it takes to dress and process the birds could cause the meat to start deteriorating. Even after processing, storage by freezing requires good functional freezer (if the quantity is small) with good supply of electricity or better still a cold room which is also cost demanding. The technicalities in manipulating the feeding regimen, deplucking and processing (dressing), storage and finally marketing make farmers to shy away from this venture and divert their resources and attention to Egg Production which shouldnt be so. That is why FARMERGIANT NIGERIA LIMITED is there to guide you through any aspect of Poultry Production (Meat and/or Egg) with emphasis laid down from start up to marketing.
