other banks (if not all)do collect the monthly maintenance fee. And also charge u a thousand bulk for loosing ur card. This is where they STEAL dir money. Olodo, your bank charges you #15 for every sms, while the actual cost to them is #0.85k; difference of #14.15k. Now multiply this by 10 million transactions per day.

Now imagine #100 per 40 million customers per month.

You also forget that interest of 10% - 30% is being earned by the bank on loans; using your own money. How much do they pay you out of this - 0.3%.

You're just like your forefathers who willingly sold their children for liquor and mirrors. Ode.

Bank business = Daylight robbery. Too bad they set the bar too high for new entrants; i won't mind owning one myself.

These bankers are so smart, they jst announced few months ago dat the #100 being charged on ATM has been removed. This time around, every customer wil have to part wit #100 every month. They mst ve done their calculation before suspending it few months ago. They wil make more profitS removing #100 frm evry customer monthly than charging a customer #100 after using another bank's ATM.These people are EXECUTIVE armed robbers stealing frm helpless and jobless nigerians.
Re: N100 Monthly Charge On First-Bank ATM Withdrawals by xzit(m): 5:29am On Mar 05, 2013
It's really disturbing how these banking organisations can just rip off customers who have entrusted them with their money. Imagine first bank has even joined the lot! It was for this ridiculous charges that I discontinued the usage of my UBA account about 6 years ago. The worst part is these banks send your smses on sundry matters but will never send you any message informing you of the charges they pilfer from your account at their whim. I noticed this with Assess bank and queried the customer care, was told it was maintenance charges for the account. Meanwhile I dont even have an ATM for that account! She also told me they had resolved to charge yearly (N1000/year) rather than monthly. So to that even N1000 was deducted from my account. Funny thing is in the last end-of-month balance sent me, some money was deducted still! So, I've resolved to clear that account before they do so for me!

Its same with telecoms too. Their call rates keep changing without any prior information to users, but they'll bombard you with unsolicited ad campaigns! Some months ago, I recharged my glo line quite often since they had a uniform charge across networks (N15/min to all networks). One day, I recharge to call and behold my credit is exhausted in less than 10 minutes! I knew something was amiss, called the customer care and was told the rates had been reviewed upward, saying calla to other networks was now twenty-something! I was furious...even considered burning down a glo mast or two! But that was it for me and glo...havent called with that line for months, and I won't!

Forgive the long commentary but I'm just so miffed that we would be used like we are a bunch of buffoons and nonentities. While some of us remain unaware of these pilferings, many just feel helpless about it. What's worse is the regulatory bodies (NCC, CBN) are in their pockets. IT'S JUST SO WRONG!!!

I have a similar issue with them. And they just won't inform you on what is being deducted and why until you ask sternly. Yet they tell new customers that there are no (hidden) costs in running an account with them. SMH. All the customer service boils down to BS!!!
Re: N100 Monthly Charge On First-Bank ATM Withdrawals by Nobody: 5:42am On Mar 05, 2013
I know Nigerians aint dumb, CBN made the first mistake of revoking the 100naira other card charge. For heaven's sake, where does the bank now get money to maintain and sustain the ATMs? Nevertheless, all banks charges for stuffs like that, most of them just charge u without telling u, except u ask them why.
Re: N100 Monthly Charge On First-Bank ATM Withdrawals by santanovva(m): 5:56am On Mar 05, 2013
Before the 17th of January, whenever you used your card on another bank's atm machine, there was an instant charge of N100 but with the intervention of the cbn, this was discontinued. The point to note is that the 100 being collected earlier was not all profit for the banks but they also used part of it to offset expenses associated with atm maintenance and usage.Interswitch still had to be paid for connecting the transactions.

None of the banks are in business to do 'the boy is good business' but rather, profitability is the goal.Again, I believe the harsh financial and business environment of Nigeria calls for shrewd business orientation and execution. If Sanusi ends the 100 inter-atm charge, on whose head does he intend shifting the bill? The banks?think again!

The good news is that even if you use your card 20 times (on different atm machines)in a month, ALL you would be charged is just 100 (or 200 as some banks practice)

If you are really averse to this monthly charge then please, don't even activate your card at all (don't change the default pin) but rather go into the bank and make an over-the-counter withdrawal. If I am not mistaken, such over-the-counter withdrawals that is not over 100k also attracts a charge every time - N100 or so

FIRST BANK MOVED THE MOTION TO STOP THE CHARGES ON CASH WITHDRAWAL ON ATM'S AND WHERE THE ONE THAT STARTED IT BEFORE CBN GAVE A MANDATE FOR ALL BANK TO FOLLOW SUIT WITH EFFECT FROM 17TH DEC 2012. SO AFTER FINDING OUT THAT IT IS TELLING ON THEM THAT THEY ARE NO LONGER MAKING PROFITS FROM THE CHANGE THEY MOVED FOR THEY ARE NOW INTRODUCING ANODA CHARGE. I AM VERY SORRY FOR CUSTOMERS COS VERY SOON ALL BANKS WILL DO SAME. WELL I STILL BANK WITH UNION BANK

100 monthly on cash withdrawals made on the ATM to me is not bad. All other banks do this and you are not told. How else will these banks remain profitable. No one or organisation goes into business to offer free lunch and services.

If CBN clamps down on the banks and continue to cut down their revenue channels, trust the banks to come with other ways to generate income. It beats me we want Everything absolutely Free in naija.
