Honda Bulldog 97 Model Excessive Fuel Consumption by oluseg2: 6:59pm On Mar 17, 2013 |
Dear Nairalanders! Please I need suggestion as to how I can overcome the problem of excessive fuel consumption of my Honda Accord 1997 model popularly called Bulldog. The vehicle runs on like 10 liters of fuel for a journey covering about 35km( i.e Akowonjo-Egbeda area of Lagos State to Oregun in Ikeja and back to Akowonjo) and this is really frustrating. Please what can I do to remedy the situation taking into consideration the fact that the journey combined together takes like 3 hours due to traffic holdup?. Below is the designed specification of the car. Transmission: Lock-up/Automatic/4 Speed Engine Size: 2.2 litres Fuel Mileage(City): 12.4 Litres/100km Fuel Mileage(Highway): 8.7 Litres/100km Fuel Mileage(Combined): 10.2 Litres/100km[s] |

oluseg2: Dear Nairalanders! Please I need suggestion as to how I can overcome the problem of excessive fuel consumption of my Honda Accord 1997 model popularly called Bulldog. 2.2 litre is not a small engine remember stop and start increase fuel consumption average of those figures is 10 litre = 2 gallons and 35km = 22 miles and your car is 2.2 litre i thinks those are the incorrect average figure for a 2.2 litre engine 100kms on 10 litre with a 2.2 litre engine Noooo in miles its 62 miles per 2 gallon |

10 litres should give you about 62mpg according to the manufacturer ( HONDA) For every 10litres, you are losing about 29mpg. Check you plugs. Is your thermostat in place. If your engine runs cold, you car would guzzle fuel. Is your 02 censor in place? |

micklplus: 10 litres should give you about 62mpg according to the manufacturer ( HONDA) are you considering the engine size ? check this honda same engine http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Spec_Glance.aspx?year=1997&make=Honda&model=Accord&trimid=617#trimsel it says average is CITY -- 23- 25mpg in kilometers its 40 pkm HIGHWAY --- 29 31mpg in kilometers its 49 pkm |

Does your car show any symptoms of being faulty? Does it give out black or white smoke when u accelerate? (you can tell a close friend to trail u and observe or u can park the car and have someone rev it slightly while u observe the tail pipe). Does it idle roughly? When u r stopped in traffic, where does your needle point to on the rpm instrument display? Answers to these questions might help us narrow down the cause of ur fuel issue. cheers. 2.2 is a small engine compared to what most cars come with these days. My 2.4 litre engine still does 19 mpg. I have a lightfoot by the way. |

ZIM DRILL: We are saying the same thing. 31mpg(highway) x 2 = 62miles per 10litres (2gallons) and yes, that's a 2.2 litres engine. I have thesame car and I know what I am saying. |

micklplus: 10 litres should give you about 62mpg according to the manufacturer ( HONDA)Thanks Mickplus. I recently replaced the spark plugs but I don't think the thermostat is in place now since the two fans have been connected on continuous rotation. However, I will have to check the oxygen sensor as advised. 9icetoo: Does your car show any symptoms of being faulty? Does it give out black or white smoke when u accelerate? The only thing I can confirm is that the vehicle idles roughly with the rpm droping to like 400 sometimes thus disallowing me from using the A/c. My Mechanic had to adjust the engine speed few days ago and it's 1200rpm at idle. This I understand can result to high fuel consumption but the bottom line is that the problem of high fuel consumption has always been there even before he adjusted it. What do you think might be responsible?. |

All these analysis above have not and will not address the issue. @ Op, Since you cannot troubleshoot your car manually, what stopping you from scanning the car and save yourself the trouble of guess work? Is this not a '97 model that we are talking about here? Because last time i checked, '96 EFI cars are OBD II compliant. Unless you want to tell it wasnt installed in American spec Honda Accords of that year? Ikenna. |

there was a post here some days ago about blocked catalysts causing high fuel consumption. have your mechanic check ur catalyst to make sure it isnt blocked and choking ur engine. However scan the car first like ikenna suggested. |

Mr Ikenna's advise is very apt here. Your car indeed have a problem. I use this same model and my 10liters does at least 65km which I think is not bad for a 16year old car. I drive in Akure anyway not in Lagos where there is lots of hazzles. Take ur car for a scan and get the problem fixed, cheers! |
