How is shock related to broncopneumonia? why are things just falling apart in Nigeria? ignorance has really gained upper hand in the country. I lost my grandma at 65 and we gave her departed soul a blissful farewell..Why can't we be sensible enough to let the great man sleep in Peace>>>>>>

The family of foremost literary icon, Chinua Achebe, said their late patriarch died peacefully following a brief illness.

A statement released by his agent and family confirmed that he died last night in a hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, “following a brief illness.”

Describing the late writer as “one of the great literary voices of his time”, the statement also said Prof Achebe “was also a beloved husband, father, uncle and grandfather, whose wisdom and courage are an inspiration to all who knew him. Professor Achebe’s family requests privacy at this time.”

The statement said Mr. Achebe’s “wisdom and courage” was an “inspiration to all who knew him.”

Meanwhile, Brown University, where foremost novelist, Prof Chinua Achebe, worked until his death last night, says it would organize a memorial in honour one of its most valuable faculty member in history.

A statement from the university, emailed to PREMIUM TIMES, described the late literary icon’s passing as an event as global significance.

Prof Achebe joined Brown in September 2009 and was its David and Marianna Fisher University Professor and professor of Africana Studies until his death.

And a thick layer of grief has enveloped the university with faculty members terribly devastated by news of his death.

In tribute, Brown University President, Christina Paxson said, ““The colloquia he organized at Brown attracted a grand array of guests and effectively demonstrated how the humanities can build understanding by drawing from and encouraging a variety of perspectives. We were honored to have him among us.”

This is from the family
Whatever anyone says is irrelevant
The man was 82 for heaven's sake
What is with all this Wole said this and that?
Did an 82 year old man die untimely?

Metallurgist: Shame on soyinka and co. Could one not die of complication as in the case of chinue who died in a hospital abroad without it havin a thing with the north? In a time when this country need positive attitude, look at how they create a confusing baseless and hate inciting comments, shame on agent of destruction

Don't be quick to condemn
Wole may be Yoruba but he is not known to be flippant with his tongue
I doubt if he said those words

If Wole spoke with guardian UK correspondent then it is true he did make such a foolish statement and I will be disappointed
If not,it is likely to be false
He was not with Achebe at his death
Achebe has been in the hospital a short while
It is impossible that the family of a sick man in the hospital will be updating him with news of death and destruction in his faraway native land
Who does that?

Chinua Achebe's death: we have lost a brother - Wole Soyinka and JP Clark

Chinua was a man of resilient will. His works are testimony to the domination of the human spirit over the forces of repression

guardian.co.uk, Friday 22 March 2013 19.23 GMT

For us, the loss of Chinua Achebe is, above all else, intensely personal. We have lost a brother, a colleague, a trailblazer and a doughty fighter. Of the "pioneer quartet" of contemporary Nigerian literature, two voices have been silenced – one, of the poet Christopher Okigbo, and now, the novelist Chinua Achebe. It is perhaps difficult for outsiders of that intimate circle to appreciate this sense of depletion, but we take consolation in the young generation of writers to whom the baton has been passed, those who have already creatively ensured that there is no break in the continuum of the literary vocation.

We need to stress this at a critical time of Nigerian history, where the forces of darkness appear to overshadow the illumination of existence that literature represents. These are forces that arrogantly pride themselves implacable and brutal enemies of what Chinua and his pen represented, not merely for the African continent, but for humanity. Indeed, we cannot help wondering if the recent insensate massacre of Chinua's people in Kano, only a few days ago, hastened the fatal undermining of that resilient will that had sustained him so many years after his crippling accident.

No matter the reality, after the initial shock, and a sense of abandonment, we confidently assert that Chinua lives. His works provide their enduring testimony to the domination of the human spirit over the forces of repression, bigotry and retrogression.

djon78: These men Soyinka, Achebe, JP Clarke were rare of a kind ever to walk the face of this continent. Its a pity rather abominable men without any iota of character have been runing the affairs of this country for the past 4 decades and we do we expect anything good to come out of this country? No
I pray that the legacies of these men last for generations while the abominable men reap their reward.

Soyinka and Clark are abominable men and grumpy old mischief makers. sad

So where did the Guardian say Chinua died from shock after the Kano blasts
Isn't that what we are discussing?

Died from shock?? They wondered if it hastened the fatal undermining of his will.

Thank you
It is unheard of that a man in the hospital will be updated of bombings in his homeland
No family does that
They are not even told of death of family members
So if indeed Wole says those things, that was pretty irresponsible of him.
I am disappointed.

naptu2: Kai! Nigeria!

This is a very simple thing. Punch decided to play up the Kano angle in order to get more sales/hits, but take a good look at what Soyinka and Clark wrote. They did not say that the bomb blast killed him. They said they wonder if it hastened the undermining of his will.

Basically, they are trying to use Achebe's death to highlight what happened in Kano (and has been happening in northern Nigeria for a while) which is the killing of innocent people (much like the way Professor Olikoye Ransome-Kuti used Fela's death to highlight the scourge of HIV/AIDS), something that Achebe would have been against.

The are some things better left in one's imagination
Awolowo was said to have died of a heart attack in his bathroom
If someone reported that his heart attack could have been caused by his failure at two presidential elections, would that be a fair assessment or a callous one?
I love Wole Soyinka
He goofed here big time
The two occurrences are totally unrelated .
He should have left it as such
there is a high probability Chinua knew nothing of the bombing in Kano to begin with
Re: Kano Bombing May Have Caused Achebe's Death – Soyinka, Clark by naptu2: 9:31pm On Mar 23, 2013
If you read Soyinka's works regularly, you'll understand what he did there. The three important words in that part of the statement are "wondered", "will" and "reality". They wondered, which means they did not know. Undermined his will, meaning undermined his will to fight the ailment. No matter the reality, which means it's not just about whether that happened or not, but there's a bigger message.

Finally, the word "shock" only appeared in that statement to describe Wole Soyinka and J.P. Clark's feelings when they heard that Achebe had died.

Great men don't die, they live on in the hearts of people that share their beliefs, vision, passion and wisdom. CA might be an Igbo man but his works inspired Nigerians and to an extent Africans. We young Nigerians should realise that so many great men have died through the emotional pain they begot whilst stuggling to make the nation better for the younger generation.......Gani Fawehinmi, Fela Anikulapo, Ojukwu, Awowolowo, Dele Giwa, Bola Ige and Now CA didn't die in vain, they ascended to the great beyond so that some of us can continue from where they stopped. Nigeria shall be great, Africans will be free and Humanity will unite...they all didn't die for glory, power or honour, they died for freedom, they gave their all, what are you willing to give?

'If you are not ready to die for it, remove the word freedom out of your vocabulary' - Malcolm X.

interesting perspective but i doubt it's the accurate course of his death. i think the reason he died so suddenly is probably he had the disease camping in him for awhile and noone including his family members noticed the symptoms. they probably thought it was the common cold. well he'll forever be remembered as one of Africa's greatest icons

What balderdash: anybody with common sense would quickly surmise the improbability that a man in the octogenarian's poor health, hospitalized with pneumonia and fighting for his life in far away America, would be in the least concerned or interested with the going on beyond his immediate surroundings let alone that in the distant kano of northern Nigeria; besides, even if he would it would be most unlikely that his handlers would allow such disturbing information to reach him - given his fragile condition at the time.
The fact some ppl would unashamedly try to make a connection between the two incidences goes a long way to show the degree of their desperation towards their thinly veiled agenda, to divide Nigerians through dissemination of half truths and propaganda, designed to incite the gullible and impressionable into hatred and unrest.
With this level of desperation, how are we in fact not sure whether these secessionists are infact not the ones sponsoring these bombings by proxy, while deliberately stoking the flames with their unguarded statements.
