Chinua Achebe, through his books, undoubtedly promoted Nigerian culture not only to Nigerians but also to the world, which made him a de facto ambassador for Nigeria. Chinua Achebe loved Nigeria. In the latter stage of his life, however, Chinua Achebe and members of his family had a tense relationship with Nigeria. Achebe as a matter of fact has been a United States resident for many years and was a professor at a United States university.

As of today, Achebe's family has not announced the burial plans, making some people to speculate that Achebe's family are considering burying him in the United States. This has infuriated several members of the Igbo community. For example, the Anambra State Government has unequivocally stated that it wants Achebe buried in his community, reasoning that it is impracticable for the literary incon to be buried on foreign soil. Anambra State Governor supposedly intends to meet Achebe's family to appeal to them that he be buried in his home state.

Ultimately, in my opinion, the decision of where to bury Chinua Achebe should rest with his family, and the Governor should stay out this family matter. Whether he is buried in Anambra or in the United States, the literary icon should be allowed to rest in peace. I think Achebe should be buried in his home state, although there is a strong argument that he should be buried in the United States.
