There's no need to panic. What you see those soldiers doing is a routine drill called an Artificial Intoxication Exercise, and it is only one of several other unconventional practices that combine to make the Nigerian Army such a lethal force.

The Artificial Intoxication Exercise generally involves kneeling on a hard surface, then bending till one's head scrubs the ground like a pious Muslim.

You may imagine that the hats on which the soldiers' heads appear to be resting are there to make them comfortable. This is not so. Each hat in fact conceals a huge stone which digs into each man's forehead as he struggles for balance.

If performed properly - usually in the heat of a particularly fiery afternoon sun - the Artificial Intoxication Exercise is known to have the same effect as smoking three days worth of the purest Columbian weed. Among its benefits is the fact that it puts military personnel in the right frame of mind to administer 'frog jumps', stray bullets, or life-changing slaps to deserving individuals.

The next time you observe a number of Nigerian soldiers straining in the sun with their bùtts turned skywards like an unholy offering, keep calm, for all is well. There is no cause for control, everything is under alarm.
