share your favourite quotes from novels that you've read ( not motivational books). I will start with these from matrim cauthon (wheel of time)
"nothing is more dangerous to the sanity of men than a woman with too much time on her hands"
"she is not a woman... She is Aes seddai... Don't think of her as a woman"

'Children are dying.'
Lull nodded. 'That's a
succinct summary of
humankind, I'd say.
Who needs tomes and
volumes of history? Children are dying.
The injustices of the
world hide in those
three words. Quote
me, Duiker, and your
work's done.' The bastard's right.
Economics, ethics, the
games of the gods - all
within that single,
tragic statement. I'll
quote you, soldier. Be assured of that.

"The soul knows no
greater anguish than
to take a breath that
begins with love and
ends with grief. But
there are other anguishes, many
others. They unfold as
they will, and to dwell
within them is to
understand nothing.
"Except, perhaps, this. In love, grief is a
promise. As sure as

be many gardens, but
this last one to visit is

dark, standing alone.

believe me, that's the next novel you'd like to read after the wheel of time series - Although the characters are not as white and black as they are in wheel of time. I'm just starting the series, and when i'm done, i'll judge between the two to know which is better. But so far, Matrim Cauthon is my all time best character. I'm even writing a fanfic about him!

bros, you don try sha, however you may want to hurry up with that and move on to the next one (i.e crossroads of twilight), which to me is one the best in the series, as it saw the epic battle between Perrin and the shaido Aiel,as well as the climax of the love affair between Mat and his wife

Re: Top Quotes From Novels You've Read by Valon4ego(m): 11:20am On Mar 31, 2013
these classic quotes are from the novel warbreaker, and mainly from lightsong, my favourite god in the book.
“Mocking a woman is
like drinking too much
wine. It may be fun for
a short time, but the hangover is hell.”
― Brandon Sanderson, Warbreaker “Unknowing ignorance
is preferable to
informed stupidity.”
― Brandon Sanderson, Warbreaker
“You're a very difficult
person to manipulate,
you know."
"Nonsense," he said.
"You just have to
promise me that I won't have to do a
thing, and then I'll do
anything you want."
"Anything?"
"Anything that
doesn't require doing anything."
"That's nothing,
then."
"Is it?"
"Yes."
"Well, that's something.”
― Brandon Sanderson, Warbreaker “I swear, my dear.
Sometimes our
conversations remind
me of a broken
sword."
She raised an eyebrow. "Sharp as hell,"
Lightsong said, "but
lacking a point.”
― Brandon Sanderson, Warbreaker
“Every man is a hero of
his own story.”
― Brandon Sanderson
“My dear, did you just
try to prove the
existence of God
through the use of
your cleavage?”
― Brandon Sanderson, Warbreaker
“It was strange, how
easily and quickly
protection could cause
destruction.
Sometimes, Vasher
wondered if the two weren't really the
same thing. Protect a
flower, destroy pests
who wanted to feed on
it. Protect a building,
destroy the plants that could have grown in
the soil. Protect a man.
Live with the
destruction he
creates.”
― Brandon Sanderson, Warbreaker

“Regardless, you ask
why I
did not greet you.
Well, let us assume
that I had acted as you
suggest I should. Upon your
approach, you would
have had me gush over
you?”
“Naturally.”
“You would have me point out how
stunning you appear in
that gown?”
“I wouldn’t complain.”
“Mention how your
dazzling eyes glisten in the fireworks like
burning
embers?”
“That would be nice.”
“Expound on how your
lips are so perfectly red that they could
leave any
man breathless with
wonder, yet drive him
compose the most
brilliant of poetry each time he
re called the moment?”
“I’d be flattered for
certain.”
“And you claim you
want these reactions from me?”
“I do.”
“Well blast it, woman,”
Lightsong said, picking
up his cup. “If I’m
stunned, dazzled, and breathless, then how
the hell am I supposed
to greet
you? By definition,
won’t I be struck
dumb?” She laughed. “Well,
then, you’ve obviously
found your tongue
now.”
“Surprisingly, it was in
my mouth,” he said. “I always forget to check
there.”
― Brandon Sanderson, Warbreaker

more where that came from
“I try to avoid having
thoughts. They lead to
other thoughts, and—
if you're not careful—
those lead to actions.
Actions make you tired. I have this on
rather good authority
from someone who
once read it in a book.”
― Brandon Sanderson Warbreaker
“Llarimar had told him
to do his best. That
sounded like an awful
lot of work.
Unfortunately, doing
nothing was beginning to seem like even
MORE work.”
― Brandon Sanderson,
“I like words. And I
always learn a few new
ones when Father gets
angry. I shouldn't
neglect my education,
now should I?” ― Brandon Sanderson, Warbreaker
“She’s only seventeen
years old,” Llarimar
said. “I can’t imagine
being
married to the God
King at her age.” “I can’t imagine you
being married to the
God King at any age,
Scoot,”
Lightsong said. Then
he pointedly cringed. “Actually, yes I can
imagine it,
and the dress looks
painfully inelegant on
you. Make a note to
have my imagination flogged
for its insolence in
showing me that par
ticular sight.”
“I’ll put it in line right
behind your sense of decorum, Your Grace,”
Llarimar said dryly.
“Don’t be silly,”
Lightsong said, taking
a sip of wine. “I
haven’t had one of those in years.”
― Brandon Sanderson, Warbreaker
“A person knows when
they’re in darkness,
even when they can’t
see. -Nightblood”
― Brandon Sanderson, Warbreaker
“Oh, I wouldn’t say
that. Work, my dear
Blushweaver, is like
fertilizer.”
“It smells?”
He smiled. “No, I was thinking that work is
like fertilizer in that
I’m glad it exists; I just
don’t ever want to get
stuck in it.”
― Brandon Sanderson, Warbreaker

“Everyone gets scared,
Princess. Even brave
men sometimes run
the first time they see
battle. In armies,
that's why there's so much training. The
ones who hold aren't
the courageous ones,
they're the well-
trained ones. We have
instincts like any other animal.”
― Brandon Sanderson, Warbreaker

“My dear, have you
ever known me to
make an
inflammatorily
ridiculous statement
without providing an equally ridiculous
explanation to
substantiate it?”
“Of course not,” she
agreed. “You are
nothing if not exhaustive in your self-
congratulatory made-
up logic.”
― Brandon Sanderso, Warbreaker

I think matrim is the coolest out of the ta'veren he gets all the great lines I could do without perrin aybara and his troublesome wife though.
Am really skeptical about brandon sandersons part seeing as how I dumped the mistborn trilogy first book halfway to begin the TWOT I heard is good but his first book I read elantris, didn't do it for me.

brandon sanderson really did a good work on the WOT series. I doubt they could have picked a better guy. Anyway, a trial will convince you. He added the needed touch to the book

Nightside Simon R Greene

John Taylor: "he looked as run down and untrustworthy as the place he worked in which took some doing. Carter was neurotically thin, defiantly unhealthy and basically disgusting on a genetic level. You got the feeling he'd still be sleazy even if you soaked him in bleach for a week. He did his best to look put-upon and hard done by but I still felt an instinctive need to slap him on general principles".

Drood Series
Molly Metcalf (one trio of the infamous Metcalf witch sisters): "beat it or I shall turn you into something runny and squishy with testicles floating all over"

John Taylor to an ogre "...he bellowed in a voice so thick he must have had a third testicle tucked away somewhere"

John Taylor: "you are as useless as the last four letters in the word QUEUE"

Anonymous (Nightside 11): "Come forward scum that I may bestow beatings on you"

Plenty more but I can remember these few cos it was the last series I consumed. Yeah yeah the first isn't exactly a quote but I'm Zibah....sue me. Nyahahahahah!!!

Re: Top Quotes From Novels You've Read by Valon4ego(m): 7:38pm On Mar 31, 2013
these quotes from matrim cauthon are all from the 13th book of the wheel of time series
He had found Setalle at the supply tents, overseeing the midday meal ... Setalle was not needed here; the Band's cooks had always been able to prepare meals without her. But there was nothing a woman liked better than finding men who were relaxing, then giving them orders. Besides, Setalle was a former innkeeper and—remarkably—a former Aes Sedai. Mat often found her supervising things that did not need supervising. Not for the first time, he wished Tuon were still traveling with him. Setalle had usually taken Tuon's side, she had kept her busy. Nothing was more dangerous for the sanity of men than a woman with too much time on her hands. Setalle still wore clothing of the Ebou Dari style... That kind of outfit worked particularly well on a woman as buxom as Setalle. Not that he noticed...The jeweled wedding knife worn around her neck seemed something of a warning, the way it nestled in her cleavage. Not that Mat noticed that, either.
2
Instead, he wasmarried to a Seanchan High Blood and was off to beg the Queen of Andor for her help. How did he get these situations? Sometimes he thought that the Creator must be like Talmanes. Straight of face, but secretly having a grand time laughing at Mat.
3
His eyes found Elayne immediately. She sat beside a hearth, holding a cup of what appearedto be milk. She looked radiant in a gown of deep red and gold. Beautiful, full red lips that Mat would not have minded kissing, if he had not been a married man.... She seemed to have gained a littleweight. Best not to mention that. Or should he? Sometimes women got angry when you mentioned that they looked different, and sometimes they got angry if you did not notice.
the guy seems to have a unique philosophy about women. I will be back for more

i said something about Mat cauthon's epic quote on women, here it is (he just got separated from his wife and was travelling with some ladies that quite frustrated his life)
"Women are like
[omited]. It's like . . .
Well, reasoning
with a woman is
like sitting down
to a friendly game of dice.
Only the woman
refuses to
acknowledge the
basic bloody rules
of the game. A man, he'll cheat
you - but he'll do
it honestly. He'll
use loaded dice,
so that you think
you're losing by chance. And if
you aren't clever
enough to spot
what he's doing,
then maybe he
deserves to take your coin. And
that's that. A
woman, though,
she'll sit down to
that same game
and she'll smile, and act like she's
going to play.
Only when it's
her turn to
throw, she'll toss
a pair of her own dice that are
blank on all six
sides. Not a single
pip showing.
She'll inspect the
throw, then she'll look up at
you and say,
'clearly I just
won.' Now, you'll
scratch your head
and look at the dice. Then you'll
look up at her,
then down at the
dice again 'But
there aren't any
pips on these dice' you'll say."
'Yes there are,'
she'll say. 'And
both dice rolled a
one.' 'That's
exactly the number you need
to win,' you'll
say. 'What a
coincidence,'
she'll reply, then
begin to scoop up your coins. And
you'll sit there,
trying to wrap
your head 'bout
what just
happened. And you'll realise
something. A pair
of ones isn't the
winning throw!
Not when you
threw a six on your turn. That
means she
needed a pair of
twos instead!
Excitedly you'll
explain what you've
discovered. Only
then do you
know what she'll
do?" "No idea,
Mat." "Then she'll reach over
and rub the blank
faces of her dice.
And then, with a
perfectly straight
face, she'll say, 'I'm sorry. There
was a spot of dirt
on the dice.
Clearly you'll see
they actually
came up as twos!' And she'll
believe it. She'll
bloody believe
it!" "Incredible."
"Only that's not
the end of it!" "I had presumed it
wouldn't be
Mat." "She
scoops up all of
your coins. And
then every other wonam in the
room will come
over and
congratulate her
on throwing that
pair of twos! The more you
complain, the
more those
bloody women
will join in the
argument. You'll be outnumbered
in a moment, and
each of those
women will
explain to you
how those dice clearly read twos,
and how you
really need to
stop behaving
like a child. Every
single flaming one of them will
see the twos!
even the prudish
woman who has
hated your
woman from birth - since your
woman's granny
stole the other
woman's
granny's
honeycake recipe when they were
both maids - that
woman will side
against you."
"They're
nefarious creatures
indeed." "By the
time they're
done, you'll be
left with no coin,
several lists worth of errands
to run and what
clothing to wear
and a splitting
headache. You'll
sit there and stare at the table
and begin to
wonder, just
maybe, if those
dice didn't read
twos after all. If only to preserve
what's left of
your sanity.
That's what it's
like to reason
with a woman, I tell you."

“The Empress will

"So she will," Mat
said. "As I'll follow
where she goes, I suppose. I hope that

― Robert Jordan, A Memory of Light
“I have never known

hard work, Matrim
Cauthon.” ― Robert Jordan, A Memory of Light
“How would you feel,"
Elayne said softly, "if
you saw your queen

Birgitte snapped,

Well, enough of wheel of time for now. Time to move to other books
Re: Top Quotes From Novels You've Read by Valon4ego(m): 10:01pm On Apr 05, 2013
these are from the sword of truth series by Terry Goodkind (legend of the seeker)
“Every person's life is
theirs by right. An
individual's life can
and must belong only
to to himself, not to
any society or community, or he is
then but a slave.”
― Terry Goodkind

“People are stupid;
given proper
motivation, almost
anyone will believe
almost anything.
Because people are stupid, they will
believe a lie because
they want to believe
it's true, or because
they are afraid it
might be true. People’s heads are full of
knowledge, facts, and
beliefs, and most of it
is false, yet they think
it all true. People are
stupid; they can only rarely tell the
difference between a
lie and the truth, and
yet they are confident
they can, and so are all
the easier to fool.” ― Terry Goodkind, Wizard's First Rule

“...you'll find that
being a friend is to like
a person for who they
are, even the parts you
don't understand. You
don't have to understand, or do the
same, or live their lives
for them. If you truly
care for them, then
you want them to be
who they are; that was why you liked them in
the first place.”
― Terry Goodkind

“The light of a new
day always chases the
shadows of the night
away, and shows us
that the shape of our
fears is only the ghost of our own minds.”
― Terry Goodkind, Wizard's First Rule

“Once lucky, twice
confident, and thrice
dead.”
― Terry Goodkind, Blood of the Fold

“Not everyone is
willing to embrace
liberty; liberty requires
not just effort, but
risk. Some people
choose to delude themselves and see
their chains as
protective armor.”
― Terry Goodkind, Chainfire

“Pity for the guilty is
treason to the
innocent." -Kahlan”
― Terry Goodkind, Faith of the Fallen

“If you are unwilling to
defend your right to
your own lives,
then you are merely
like mice trying to
argue with owls. You think their ways
are wrong.
They think you are
dinner.”
― Terry Goodkind, Naked Empire

“Once committed to
fight, cut. Everything
else is secondary. Cut.
That is your duty, your
purpose, your hunger.
There is no rule more important, no
commitment that
overrides that one.
Cut. Cut from the void,
not from
bewilderment. Cut the enemy as quickly and
directly as possible.
Cut decisively,
resolutely. Cut into
the enemy’s strength.
Flow through the gaps in his guard. Cut him.
Cut him down utterly.
Don’t allow him a
breath. Crush him. Cut
him without mercy to
the depths of his spirit."
-Richard Rahl”
― Terry Goodkind, Faith of the Fallen

“Wrong doing must be
punished. If not, it will
proliferate until
anarchy wears the
robes of tolerance and
understanding.” ― Terry Goodkind, Blood of the Fold

“When the whole
world is crazy, it
doesn't pay to be
sane.”
― Terry Goodkind, The Pillars of Creation

“History is rarely made
by reasonable men.”
― Terry Goodkind

“Right and wrong are
not the product of
census.”
― Terry Goodkind, Naked Empire

“Wizard's Fourth Rule
There is magic in
sincere forgiveness; in
the forgiveness you
give, but more so in
the forgiveness you receive.”
― Terry Goodkind, Temple of the Winds

“We reap a reward
merely in the act of
helping others. We
never know how, or if,
that reward will come
back to us. Helping is the reward; none
other is needed nor

“Reality is irrelevant;
Perception is
everything.”

“Wizard's Tenth Rule
Willfully turning aside
from the truth is
treason to one's self.”
― Terry Goodkind, Phantom

“many people must be
ruled to thrive. In their
selfishness and greed,
they see free people as
their oppressors. They
wish to have a leader who will cut the taller
plants so the sun will
reach them. They
think no plant should
be allowed to grow
taller than the shortest, and in that
way give light to all.
They would rather be
provided a guiding
light, regardless of the
fuel, than light a candle themselves.”
― Terry Goodkind, Wizard's First Rule

Two households both alike in dignity
in fair Veronna where we lay our scene
from ancient grudge break to new mutiny, where civil blood makes civil hands unclean
from the fatal loins of these two foes, a pair of star crossed lovers take their souls
