Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi Discharged And Acquited! by spora1: 2:17pm On Apr 03, 2008 |
Report has it this morning that former Chief of Army Staff, Ishaya Bamaiyi, standing trial for the attempted murder of Alex Ibru and Isaac Porbeni, has been discharged and acquited. A case of northern connection? |

Northern or Southern it is a good one period. How much longer do you want to keep him behind bars for an attempt not the real thing. How many of those who did the real killing are being prosecuted today? Not to mention being convicted. |

Tragic. The judiciary has once again failed the nation. The NJC should pay more attention to the caliber of men and women being made judges otherwise we are headed for doom in the very near future. The prosecution couldnt have established a case of guilt more clearly. Another criminal has just been let off the hook. Bamaiye can go home with all his retirement benefits but should attempt to sin no more. |

My dear his_grace Without returning any of your insults Permit me to ask: where are Bola Ige's killers, Harry Marshal, I could go on? I understand quite well what an attempt is, and I also hate it when anyone makes an attempt on the life his fellow human but I think 8 years plus for an attempt is not bad. |

Was there any tangible evidence against Bamaiyi in the first place? Keeping a man for close to 9 nines in jail without successfully convicting him is in itself a very unfair action. |

If u've been following the nigeria political scenario from at least June 12 till date, then u would have been expecting that just like me; He has been standing trial for 9yrs for attempting murder when people who were branded the enemies of the state by charging them to the court of law for treason.Leader of OPC,NDPVF,MASSOB were released with one reason or the other, like for the intrest of peace or oh!!Mum is dead. Its awful to imagine that it took the Federal govt 9yrs to know that the General is innocent because it he isn't, he won't be discharged and acquitted. I respect him as a soldier because it took nine years to brake his wings. he's a great soldier, take it or leave it. |

I think this is an agenda to unmask Obasanjo and his antics. I candidly believe that the trial was dragged this long for Obasanjo to sail through his period of administration without threats from some quarters. I also believe that the hold of Bamaiyi in the military was deliberately watered down in the nine years of his incarceration. lets ask some questions. 1) Why did it take so long before he was found innocent? 2) Why did it have to be when Obasanjo left that he was released? 3) Is there a tribalistic approach to this whole issue? 4) What of Mustapha et al? 5) Is Obasanjo's day of reckoning around? |

I am very surprised at his acquittal given the damning evidence against him given by witnesses such as Sgt Rogers. Slowly one by one Abacha's henchmen are being released. His son Mohammed was released despite also being charged as an accomplice to Abacha era murders/political assasinations. The famed "Dr Death" Colonel Yakassai (who was accused of murdering political detainees by injecting them with poisons) has been released and now works for a state government. Now Bamaiyi has also been released. I wonder what will become of Al-Mustapha? Bamaiyi was an Abacha loyalist. He had been a key member of the military cabal and his claim to fame was his role in helping to put down the 1990 Orkar coup when he was at the Lagos Garrison Command. His elevation to Chief of Army Staff was partially a delayed "reward" for that act. I'm sure before long he will give an exclusive interview about his ordeal and the ins and outs of Abacha's regime. I bet Lt-Gen Diya must be quietly fuming somewhere after Bamaiyi framed him in the 1997 coup saga. maxsiollun. 1 Like |

dude, did you study the judge's surmission he said some witnesses didnt show up and also one of the star witness contradicted himself saying he knows the man's house in one statement and then saying someone took him to the house and also some witnesses were no where to be found, the star witness sergeant rogers was an unreliable witness because at the end of the day when u r charged together with someone, the person is more liable to push the blame on you the senior officer to get a lighter sentence and also thinking that being a senior officer he ll know more people to get him off the hook while he doesnt know people, it was an attempted murder and i believe the man has more than suffered for attempted murder not to talk of having insufficient evidence, unreliable witnesses, hearsay and in some cases witnesses that were nowhere to be found, he said he s talking to his lawyers about claiming compensation abeg the rest of them abacha loyalists are all politicians and sucessful businessmen including a lot of present day politicians so why should bamaiyi only be singled out to suffer alone, he has served 9years and thats k in my opinion |

My concern for this information is with the judiciary. If he was not guilty, why did we hold the poor man for 9years, did they discharge him with a letter of apology? Why should it take 9 years to prove a man's innocence in this country? If he was not innocent, why not make him pay his due to society? No man should be above the law, northerner/southerner, rich/poor, young/old. |

What did we expect under a "Northerner's" presidency? Please, say something else. Southerners should learn thats' all! Next time the likes of OBJ will keep the power in the south for a while! They are coming for OBJ's arse next! |
