Learn Programming For Free, Right From Your Couch! by Nobody: 8:58am On Apr 05, 2013 |
A while ago, I noticed that the Computer Science courses I took in school were NEVER going to prepare me for the real deal, out there in the real world (Nigerian CS students can back me up on this). I don't know why that is, but the CS curricula of Nigerian universities are SO fucking outdated and USELESS that it's a wonder our certs are recognized abroad. Compare the Nigerian CS curriculum with that of any other school in the developed world and cringe at the injustice! So I set out to learn on my own, I and some friends. And you wouldn't believe the world of information only a click and a data subscription away. Nowadays in the era of OCW and Udacity and Khan Academy and Edx, one can learn anything from the comfort of their living room and obtain more knowledge than those that sardine themselves in a twelve-person, four by four room, being taught by mediocre "professors" with zero knowledge of Java or Perl. But I digress. I came here to talk about the best resource on the net for CS students and those wishing to learn code. TheNewBoston.org. Whatever I know in Java and HTML and CSS and Javascript and C++ came from this site. Not from school. Here, you can find comprehensive and fun video tutorials on almost any lingo you want. And the best part? IT'S ALL FREE! Here's a little word from the creator: My name is Bucky Roberts. I grew up in northern New York until I was 21 and then I moved down to Raleigh, North Carolina, where I live now. I began going to college down here but soon dropped out once I realized it wasn’t for me. Sure, I was interested in computers and web design, but most of the courses I was taking in college were totally unrelated. I dropped out figuring that I would be able to learn more on my own than any college could ever teach me. So I began reading computer books. A lot.Shortly after reading a few books on web design, I was hooked. I wanted to know everything and anything about it. I was designing websites any chance I could. I spent almost all of my savings buying more books on different programming languages and other nerdy computer gear. I was addicted. The whole concept of computer and programming fascinated me. As I continued to study more and more, I began to realize that most of the books seemed to lack excitement. The material was useful, but they were far from entertaining. I tried to look online for a more interesting source of learning but to no success. That’s when I discovered YouTube. Now for those wondering, No, I do not have a personal interest in the site, just a passion that anybody that wants to learn should, and has a right to do so, without the Nigerian System hindering them. 3 Likes |
