Gunmen Kill 13 Policemen In Bayelsa State by olillywales(m): 7:34pm On Apr 06, 2013 |
Armed men on Friday night attacked Zuzama Community of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa state, shooting dead thirteen Police officers. Three others including a Police Sergeant escaped being killed as they dived into the River. The incident, which occurred at between 6 and 7pm, happened few meters away from the Azuzama town. The Policemen, according to security sources, were deployed on escort duty from the State Government House and the State Police Headquarters to provide security during the burial ceremony of the mother to a former Militant Leader, Kile Selky Torughedi known along the waterways and creeks of the state as Young Shall Grow. Kile Selky Torughedi, who was 24 hours before the attack appointed the Senior Special Adviser on Marine Waterways Security, was in the convoy of boats before the sad end of the Policemen. While many expressed fear that the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) may have been responsible for the attack, we gathered that the aggrieved followers of the Ex-militant leader were responsible. The ex militant leader it was further learnt was having problems with his “boys” who accused him of abandoning them. He was said to have relocated to Abuja after embracing the Federal Government amnesty leaving behind his former confederates.
