ichidodo: SINCE YOU HAVE OPENED THE DOOR, LET US ENTER. WHO WAS THE FATHER OF CULTISM?
Wole Soyinka didn't start cultism on campuses. What he and six other friends founded was a fraternity which was recognized by UI, and even asked to provide security for the universi y's 21st anniversary in 1969. Forget what one of the magnificent seven, Emeritus Professor Muyiwa Awe is saying. On the discovery that some of the members in the 1960s were derailing, they were dismissed. They later formed cults (not fraternities) where they could do what PC denied them. All this made PC pull out of campuses, and came up with a new name, National Association of Seadogs. Read Soyinka's essay, "Descent of the Barbarian and the end of the Collegial" for more information about people that lie about being PC.

When did the simplicity in literature come to mean lack of depth?

When did the overusage of the thesaurus become literary mastery?

Okay....since we are on about literary criticism, chew on this:

Nadine Gordimer, nobel prize winner, on Soyinka's writing style - "overly self-conscious"

Ben Okri on Soyinka writing style - "deprives us of a great deal of wisdom with the furies of complexities"

Femi Osofisan on Soyinka - "frenzied scenes of logorrhoea"

Guardian (UK) summary of criticism -"grandiloquence and obscurantism"

In other words, all style and little substance. cheesy

I did like his plays, but his prose works are too showy and "grammar" like - as if he is trying to impress you with big words and complex use of tenses/sentences.

His work is not meant for people with low intelligence quotient

This debate reminds me of the last Oscar awards. The Avengers, a blockbuster movie that made a lot money, didn't even get nominated for best picture; infact, it didn't even win any award! While other movies that didn't sell as much as it, won awards. The movie that won the best picture in last year's Oscar was the Artist, a movie many people would find boring! It won the award because of its deep substance. So a book that people find appealing and interesting is what will sell a lot of copies, hence the high sales record of 'Things Fall Apart'; while the author of a book with deep literary substance will always win the Nobel literary prize, hence Wole Soyinka's recognition. It takes an expert to see what a normal reader can not see.

Apparently the Nobel committee was impressed with Soyinkas verbosity and not so much with Ashebes lack of verbosity

Err..no. They were more impressed with the political slant of his works and the fact that he went to prison for his opinions (i.e. support of biafra).

Coupled with the fact that they had to give the prize to a "suitable" replacement for Achebe since he proved too Africanist for their taste (Poor Conrad).

Nobel politics.

Since when did the nobel prize cement someone's status?

Oya, Hitler and Al Gore are the epitome of peace since they won the Nobel peace prize.

Where did this Igbo gal see that Hitler won Nobel laureate peace prize from. if U don't know what to say shut up and stop disgracing your tribe. We already know people from your tribe are f00ls.

By the way Al gore did outstanding work in creating worldwide awareness on climate change and global warming. imbe

And what does this man expect of well meaning individuals like me and those of Achebe's fans worldwide?
To start drinking palm oil with him?? God forbid.

Where Achebe's achievements reached, all his haters cannot even dream of. Nobel prize or not. He is still africa's foremost writer.
The man died achieving what he wants via literature.

Is it possible for somebody to hate himself or have you forgotten that Arabs are also Semites.
Anyway i think it is possible to hate yourself, the ibos practicalize that during the civil war by opening their chest to The Rages of the Black Scorpion!

Chinua Achebe wrote 'There Was A Country' abt a subject matter and told critics to go write theirs if they didn't like what he wrote.

Sam Omatseye has written his own opinion abt a subject matter, critics go and write ur own if you don't like his :p

Son-Of-El:
There are men whose influence are not dictated by prestigious awards, rather, their influence are dictated by the impact of their work. Dayokanu, you are a living disgrace, is nardine gordimer also not a nobel winner? is mandela not a nobel peace prize winner? Yet they acknowledged the great impact of the african crusader- achebe. Nobel winners honour achebe for his sacrifice towards africa. Achebe's works are beyond literature, they touch the human conscience, and this cost him the much deserved nobel prize. By the way, the nobel prize has no monopoly in rewarding literature. If achebe needed 6-digit-dollar worth of prize value, the title of his first book would have gotten it for him from 50cent.

Lol...like it or not, Achebe is the father of African literature and has made vaster literary impressions than any other African writer.

Thesaurus impressionists and Norwegian politics notwithstanding.

Achebe didnt win the Nobel prize because of his critique of a certain book from an european, which caused uproar then. Nobel Prize or not, Achebe remains the father of African literature. Even Wole Soyinka acknowledges such.

Try to read Soyinka's books, u will see that they are rich in literary sense. You will see creative use of figures of speech, a unique writing style, and a powerful content presentation. If you are not versed in literature, you won't see any of these important components of his work
Re: Sam Omatseye, Under-Fire For Column On Achebe by Nobody: 7:32pm On Apr 08, 2013
I think everyone should read things fall apart and ask how the book is helping people "understand" Africa.

All the Achebians here never read his books or only read the books because it was painting Igbos as the best tribe God created.

If you read Achebe's works including journals, then read his last book, you will know the man is a retarded old blood from the 40s. Achebe's last book was the movie other books were trailers and what was the movie about?

Division, saying his tribe is better than other tribes in Africa and blah blah blah!!!!!!

Achebe remain a disgrace even in death!!!!!!!
